Bad timing. I liked it but wasn't into it. I expect to come back to it in the future. 

I read this monster of a book and am proud of myself. Is it worth it? Debatable. I appreciate what it is: an unbelievable saga over many years and characters encompassing social philosophy, theology and warfare theory. I wish there was more from non-noble characters and that his female characters were better developed (hate the epilogue) but I actually did enjoy some of his main characters quite a bit. Pierre deserves to be lauded as one of the best characters of literature. I liked that after everything that happened and the character arcs concluded, there were still philosophical issues between our main characters that reflected how the cycle of war and peace will continue no matter what because that is life.

Speechless. Overwhelmed. I can’t believe I read and finished this behemoth of a novel. Making any attempt to convey its brilliance and the depth of my affection through a mere review feels inadequate. How much can you possibly expect from a book? ‘it is not a novel,’ Tolstoy wrote, even less is it an epic poem, and still less a historical chronicle.’

Thinking of the immense scale and complexity of his work leaves me in awe. The army is described like waves, as if a dam had burst, every soldier was but a drop in that ocean of men. Nature is sometimes used to contrast with the chaos of war and merges the elements of nature into his depiction of the battlefield, while the changing of the seasons reflect the nature of life, the passage of time, and the flux of human experiences.

There’s the moments of peace in war and war in peace. The staging of human activity, the movements of the characters are orchestrated by unseen forces, like invisible strings are attached to guide them, as if it were theatre. Oak trees, the sun, moon/moonlight and the gloomy mist being used in a symbolic sense in a moment of intense emotion. He exposes the harsh realities of death and questions the pursuit of glory by presenting characters who are driven by a strong desire for recognition, but later become disillusioned as they witness the horrors of the battle.

Tolstoy's examination of history goes beyond mere recounting of events and delves into the causes and dynamics that shape the processes often by using analogies to elucidate his reasonings. He can get repetitive at times in making his points and trying to ensure that we grasp what he is intending to say but for me personally it allowed for a deeper engagement with his ideas. I love a completely immersive reading experience.
The themes he covers; fate and free will, death and glory, social classes and inequality, human nature and morality, love and relationships, family and life, history and philosophy, war and peace. While people believe they have complete control over their actions, their decisions are often shaped by forces beyond their immediate control. The true understanding of history requires acknowledging the interplay of fate and free will and recognizing the limitations of human interpretation.

“A bee settling on a flower has stung a child. And the child is afraid of bees and declares that bees exist to sting people. A poet admires the bee sucking from the chalice of a flower and says it exists to suck the fragrance of flowers. A beekeeper, seeing the bee collect pollen from flowers and carry it to the hive, says that it exists to gather honey. Another beekeeper who has studied the life of the hive more closely says that the bee gathers pollen dust to feed the young bees and rear a queen, and that it exists to perpetuate its race. A botanist notices that the bee flying with the pollen of a male flower to a pistil fertilizes the latter, and sees in this the purpose of the bee's existence. Another, observing the migration of plants, notices that the bee helps in this work, and may say that in this lies the purpose of the bee. But the ultimate purpose of the bee is not exhausted by the first, the second, or any of the processes the human mind can discern. The higher the human intellect rises in the discovery of these purposes, the more obvious it becomes, that the ultimate purpose is beyond our comprehension. All that is accessible to man is the relation of the life of the bee to other manifestations of life. And so it is with the purpose of historic characters and nations.”

I loved especially reading about the transformative journey's of the characters and of their lives during the tumultuous historical period. Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, Pierre Bezukhov, Natasha Rostova, Sonya, Nikolai Rostov, Princess Marya, Lise, Denisov... whose individual stories intersect and interweave throughout the novel. From the grand events that shape their lives to the smallest nuances of their daily experiences, every encounter, every choice, and every consequence carries weight and meaning.

Samen met de Ulysses van James Joyce vormt Oorlog en Vrede ( В Война и мир, Voyna i mir) van Lev Tolstoj een van de meest imponerende werken van de Europese literatuur, en terecht zo. Met 1500 bladzijden exclusief epiloog is het een zware pil en inhoud vergt zekere moeite om door te komen. Het front met de Fransen, de Russische paleizen en filosofische essays volgen elkaar rap op. Soms had ik veel moeite met het doorkomen van dit boek, het liep soms traag en in verschillende paragrafen gebeurde er weinig. Toen ik het boek weglegde wilde ik in eerste instantie deze review starten met het aanraden van De Dood van Ivan Iljitsj. Een korter werk van Tolstoj wat naar mijn mening de zijns vraag die Tolstoj stelde korter en duidelijker uit wist te werken. Wat ben ik daar van bijgedraaid.

In eerste instantie was ik enorm gecharmeerd van het boek. Vanaf de eerste bladzijden had Tolstoj mij in zijn greep en ik genoot van het kennis maken met de families Rostov, Bolkonski, Bezoechov en vele anderen. Het nam even wat extra tijd en moeite om te wennen aan de vele namen en karakters, maar een familieoverzicht van Wikipedia hielp mij er door heen. Rond de 300 bladzijden begon het boek voor mij steeds meer te leven, echter kwam ik vast te zitten tussen de vijf- en zevenhonderd pagina’s. Vele scenes volgde elkaar op waarin er relatief weinig afspeelde. De grote affaires speelde op dat was zeker, maar Tolstoj nam ontzettend lang zijn tijd om alles uit te schrijven, de gedachten, gevoelens, geuren en kleuren, we kregen alles mee.

Ik voelde mij zeker verbonden met verschillende karakters. Pierre de nogal klungelige, onhandige, maar goedhartige jongeman die na zijn lessen in Frankrijk plots benoemd wordt tot hoofd van de familie Bezoechov en hiermee de rijkste man van Rusland wordt. Prins Andrej, de stoïcijnse soldaat die pas na meerdere bijna doods ervaringen tot inzicht komt, maar gesplijt wordt tussen zijn aversie tegen het leger en het willen beschermen van zijn familie en vrienden. De jonge Natasha die bespeeld wordt door Anatole, haar broertje verliest evenals haar vader, meerdere malen verliefd wordt, maar met een gebroken hart overblijft. De karakters blijven bij je, spelen met je gedachten en voelen na verloop van tijd als vrienden.

Desondanks had ik in eerste instantie geen goed gevoel bij het wegleggen van het boek. Waarom moest Tolstoj zo’n massief werk schrijven om filosofische ideeën en verhalen te tonen dat hij een aantal jaar later in honderd bladzijden weet over te brengen in De Dood van Ivan Iljitsj? Met een onbestemd gevoel ben ik in slaap gevallen, en nog en nacht, en nog een nacht, en nog een. Toen beviel het mij, ik kon het boek en de karakters niet los laten. Elke keer als ik even aan het wegdoezelen was bekroop mij wel een van de vele karakters en situaties op. Hier toonde Tolstoj zijn meesterwerk mij. Deze karakters waren mij zo dicht komen te staan dat ik ze niet los kon laten. Laten we eerlijk zijn, een boek als deze is dan ook meer een beleving dan een “gewoon” leesboek. Het neemt je voor weken, misschien zelfs maanden, mee naar een andere wereld en laat je aan niets anders denken.

Buiten dat Tolstoj een ontzettend pakkend verhaal wist neer te zetten verweeft hij er ook boeiende filosofische gedachten doorheen, samen met een duidelijke historische en politieke visie op Rusland en de Russische geest. Laten we starten met Tolstoj zijn visie op geschiedenis. In het boek verzet hij zich fel tegen de zogenaamde “grote leider” theorie die stelt dat geschiedenis geschreven wordt door, je raad het al, een grote leider. Niet een Caesar, Napoleon of Washington schrijft de geschiedenis, nee geschiedenis is iets wat wij allen schrijven. De geschiedenis is wordt gevormd door een soort onbegrijpelijk kracht, het kan het beste begrepen worden als een zwerm bijen. Wij elk zijn een deel van de zwerm evenals de koningin, en elk van ons wordt gestuurd door een soort onbegrijpelijke, vormende kracht. Dit is soms irrationeel en niet te begrijpen, maar dit vormt uiteindelijk ons handelen.

Deze irrationele kracht die ons allen stuurt, is naar mijn inzicht het beste te lezen in het handelen en denken van generaal Koetoezov. Deze enigszins timide, afwachtende en niet erg indrukwekkende (echt bestaande) veldmaarschalk neemt het op tegen het Grande Armée van niemand anders dan Napoleon. Een veteraan aan Koetoezov is, ziet hij in dat het winnen van de strijd niet afhangt van de juiste opstelling, hoeveelheid munitie of meest intelligente leger leiders, maar door de oncontroleerbare kracht genaamd moraal. Koetoezov zag het dan ook als zijn taak om als vader over de Russen te handelen naar wat het beste zou zijn voor het moraal en dit doet hij dan ook werkelijk vaderlijke manier. Als hij uiteindelijk een van de spannendste veldslagen weet te domineren is het ook niet zijn eigen intellect dat hij dankt, maar God. Hier zien we hoe Tolstoj de Westerse reden en rationaliteit plaatst tegenover de Russische wil en geest. Want als het aan Tolstoj zijn karakters ligt, is het uiteindelijk Rusland die Europa behoort te bevrijden.

Verder probeert Tolstoj in Oorlog en Vrede, de filosofie van Schopenhauer een plek te geven. Deze filosoof beschreef de wereld als een strijd van verschillende “willen”. Iedere plant, wezen en mens beschikt over deze wil en verwezenlijkt deze ten kosten van andere. Deze irrationele kracht achter het handelen schept een redelijk pessimistisch wereldbeeld. Tolstoj werkt hierin verder en zet hier tegenover een positievere irrationele wil. Ja, de wil zet de mens soms aan tot desastreuze handelingen, maar niet altijd leidt dit tot leed en vernietiging, het leidt ook tot enkele van de mooiste dingen in het menselijk bestaan, zoals liefde en omarming van het bestaan. Ja Oorlog en Vrede is geen makkelijk boek om door heen te werken, maar is het het waard? Geen enkele twijfel over.
