Incredible book. Even if some parts felt a little too relatable.

I appreciated the message the author was trying to get across. There aren’t many stories of an almost 30 year old black lesbian navigating messy relationships, burnout, and self discovery. However, the book fell flat for me.

What I didn’t like:
  • the main character was unlikeable
  • Pacing was slow, drags in beginning and then picks up towards end
  • Underdeveloped supporting characters
  • Came across a bit unrealistic in some parts (the premise of a legit drunk marriage kinda throws logic out the window but I ignored it for the sake of the story)
What I liked:
  • discussion of systemic issues, especially in academia
  • What we saw of the side characters I did like
  • Discussion of mental health
  • Navigating difficult relationships

Overall it was a decent read. It involves romance, but it’s mostly about the main character, Grace, and her delayed journey into adulthood after completing her PhD. While I really wish it had delved deeper into some of the topics and the relationships and characters, maybe it’s better it didn’t because despite the topics, it didn’t feel heavy or dark. I think the author struck a balance between light and heavy. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a short read with a diverse cast.

I hated this book more than I have hated any book I've ever read. The book read like a fantasy someone writes about friendships if they've never had close friendships. It didn't read as real or honest. It wasn't a rom-com. The author did very little research about Spanish speaking people and how they talk. The love interest was a manic pixie dream girl. I feel like the author has a bunch of potential, but needs to have real human relationships before writing the next book. None of the relationships or dialogue make any sense- they ring false.

I love a queer romcom with a good sense of community to go along with it. It was fun to see a common trope but make it gay, and I loved all the side characters. One of the better queer romcoms I have read.

The romance was swoon-worthy and sincere and the characters were all so loveable despite their flaws. This is the first romance book I've read that touched on mental health issues and their impact on relationships--both romantic and otherwise--so heavily. Grace's emotional journey was incredibly meaningful to read and brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion.
