It was a decent story but I'll admit a bit of disappointment compared to the first book. I kept expecting explanations for some of the characters and plot points, and they just never came.

*I used all my free listening hours on spotify on this book and it was not worth it*

I really wanted to like this book more, but it is probably 20 chapters too long. It would be better if the obstacles they faced were different, but all of them are exactly the same. I was bored with the insect plotline by the time the first book was over, and everything just dragged on forever. Marshall and Benedikt were easily the best part, but the payoff wasn’t good enough for me.

Another thing I tend to notice in Romeo and Juliet adaptions is that we never really find out what exactly they even like about each other. I get it, they’re in love, blah blah blah, but WHY? The books barely mention their history and barely seem to acknowledge that Roma and Juliette had 4 years to grow and change as people and don’t seem to get to know each other at all after that time.

There were a few gasp-worthy moments towards chapter 30-35, but after that, it really needed to end. I found that I wasn’t interested in if they were going to get away because it took so long to get there. It’s hard to do Romeo and Juliet well in my opinion, and this second book especially just fell flat for me.

the romance was so so sweet. the only complaint i have is that i think plot could have been condensed a bit to quicken the pace

HOLY SPIRIT ACTIVATE. HOLY SPIRIT ACTIVATE. HOLY SPIRIT ACTIVATE. ACTIVATE. ACTIVATE.

i am not okay. i finished this book sobbing in my tiny, shitty car which has no central heating in the middle of a very grim British winter, in my brother’s public school carpark surrounded by 12 year olds on bikes while i waited for him to get out of school.

the 12 year olds on bikes watching me sob:

no. no i am not bcos the ending ruined me while also being so perfectly bittersweet. i was scared af going into this since, you know, it’s a Romeo and Juliet retelling. so this book was anxiety incarnate lmao, but i adored it so much. for a debut author? this shit hits.

and fair warning, honestly, this whole review is just me simping over Benedikt and Marshall bcos they’re my babies and i love them so much. Roma and Juliette seriously had nothing on these two

4.5- not a huge fan of the ending and there are some other things I didn’t like but I was just obsessed with the characters and the whole idea of these books was really good
