4.25 stars. Personally I liked this better than these violent delights. I was very entertained and I feel like it gets into the plot way quicker than it did in the last one. When I tell you I almost stayed up past midnight to finish it I almost did. I feel like the ending was kind of rushed though and also there were a few parts that were repetitive but over all I really enjoyed it.

woah..... weh ngl this is wayyy better than the first book....... the tension, the pining, the angst, them in general .. no words.. tengah emo rn

When I tell you that rating this is so hard. I had it on a 5 stars, but I think it is more a 4.5 leaning to 4.

Overall I LOVED the book, and that alone should be a 5 stars, but I think some plotpoints were rather predictable and the beginning sort of went by for a little while without something really happening.

The will they, won't they is played out again, exessively to the point I literally was like "kill or kiss" because it was a little repetative, even though I understand that realisticallly this would happen but I think it did not help the pacing. However, I truly loved the whole last half of the book, and in a way the first part as well, but yeah (see me changing this rating to 5 because I change my mind lol)

What I enjoyed was the setting and the attention to detail (reading the authors note as well) to the riots in Shanghai and what was fictional and what true. Minus the monster part this truly feels like it could have happend.

ok I'm changing it to 5

Spoiler
When I say I knew Dimitri was behind this. I don*t know if the plot made it so dearm clear but I just knew he had something up his sleave, did I think THIS big ... no really but also yes, since in this book he played the standing back clan second a bit to well.
Rosalind though, also suspected something with her (Especially with her secret) did not think it would be Dimitri though, think I would have actually hoped it to be a no name White Flower because it just again a little to convenient, LOVE Kathleens reaction though. No mercy.

I love that Juliette & Roma got married (And his sister actually cheating it to be leagal true queen) and I was a little suprised by the ending but I mean that was the most clear when It called a Romeo & Juliette retelling.
I hope though that Ben and Marshall will have a happy life together because they went through some shit AND FINALLY TOLD EACH OTHER PROPERLY THAT THEY LOVED EACH OTHER.

I was always frustrated with how the OG Romeo and Juliet ended but this book was perfect. Action packed, lots of adventure, romantic turmoil, and an ending that has you hopeful. Everything a reader desires in a sequel.

I *almost* finished this book before the new year but alas, it was not to be.
So, a little more angsty and romancey in this book vs the last one but not done in a way that made me want to yell at the characters. They make stupid decisions, but they're the best decisions in the moment and only hindsight makes them appear stupid. I love a scheming Juliette and she is here in all of her glory.
I also LOVE how Chloe Gong plays with the original source material and adds it into the series. You can tell that she knows her play and that she knows her history for this book -- but she's still having fun making the story. I love it. I love it SO MUCH

Audiobook 🎧

After the first book, I don’t know what I was expecting this plot to be - but this wasn’t it. Only reason I didn’t DNF was that I was using the audiobook - had I been reading the physical book it would’ve lost me a few chapters in just like the first. It did pick up and had me hooked during the middle and the build up to the end, but the ending was a let down.

The twists, sure didn’t see those coming! 😲
The mains and the ‘hate to love you’ vibes, live for it! 😆

**Spoilers below!

Was honestly sticking it out for the tension and confessions between the mains and their friends. Just wish there would’ve been more about them together - rather than going from: I hate you > I’ve always loved you > marry me?  > my life for yours > both presumed dead (which I get it, Romeo and Juliet retelling and all but - come on!). And then after two books of mystery and concern around these monsters, it builds up to this big scene just to fizzle out in a mediocre wrap up.

Had been hoping for more and was instead left with a: Wait, that was it? It’s just over? (And not in a good way)
dark mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

*high pitched screeching*
