Pretty fun, though the art was a little hard to follow at times.

I enjoyed this so much! While it could easily have been simply a fun sports comic, Pamela Ribon and Veronica Fish weave in a complicated friendship narrative that feels real and deep. The art style suits the fast pace of the sport really well. Makes me want to rewatch Whip It!

Vol. 1 ★★★☆☆ (3.5)
Vol. 2 ★★★☆☆

3.5 stars. I love the use of bright, neon colors in these comics! The whole thing really gives off punk rock vibes. I also appreciate the variety of race and size representation (how much do I love seeing women of all sizes being shown as successful athletes?!). Would love to see more queer rep in future volumes (especially since I'm not sure I loved the use of the term "derby wife"-- it felt similar to straight girls talking about their "girl crush").

There was less roller derby than I expected-- the focus is mostly on relationships between the women participating, especially two who are new to the sport. I would have liked for the rules and terminology of roller derby to be explained earlier than it was, since I'm not familiar with the sport.

I was interested in the story and the characters, but there wasn't much indication of how much time was passing throughout the volume. The two main characters appeared to become fast friends, then fall apart, then become bitter rivals all very quickly. If it hadn't happened as quickly, I think their tumultuous relationship would have affected me more emotionally.

Fun visuals that really captured the movement and feel of the roller derby. The plot's not terribly unique and takes a while to get going, it's really more of a love-letter to derby than a story at times. Which I'm totally ok with. If I was reading this issue to issue I would've gotten bored, but as a trade it's fun!
Also. This is roller derby. Where are the lesbians. (yes, yes, we only see one relationship at all in the story but I don't care, I'm shallow and this is ROLLER DERBY, the most lesbian sport after woman's hockey, there have to be lesbians) (though I was getting a gay vibe from the head player of the Pushy Riots so let's see where that goes hmm)

This was really really cute.

I came into this knowing absolutely nothing about roller derby, so it was great to learn the rules and goals of the game. Although I'm now 100% I could never do it because it looks insanely difficult and there are so many injuries!!!

The art was fantastic, but the best part is the coloring. The super bright colors really give this graphic novel life and it is so pretty!
