Erg interessant!

This was an interesting book! Scott Kelly talks about working and living in space, interwoven with stories from his life and childhood that all tell the story of how he became an astronaut. Kelly has a good sense of humor, even if his delivery in the audio book is a bit dry. For me that just made his jokes funnier because I love a dry, deadpan delivery.

This book isn't a comedy book though. Kelly speaks very frankly about his time in space. He tells us about his own excitement, about his relationships with his family, and his views of his job. He talks about how interesting it is to live in space, and how tedious, mundane, and difficult it can be. He offers his perspective on the experiments that are/were being done on the ISS in the interest of learning more about the effects space has on the human body, on living things, and on biological material. He goes into detail about the efforts that each person living on ISS goes through to keep the space clean and functional. He also goes into interesting detail about how physically taxing it is to get into space and to leave it, and how emotionally taxing it was for him as well. All of that cemented what I already know: I can never go into space.

At the end of the day, I am fascinated by space and the idea of space exploration and expansion, so I really enjoyed this book. It left me feeling a sense of satisfaction having had a glimpse into what the life of an astronaut is like, and a sense of hope for the future but then again, I am an optimist.

Page after page of interesting details fill this book. From Scott's rocky start in school to the life of a test pilot (the stories are true) to daily life in space, Endurance covers it all. Stories of learning to land on an aircraft carrier show there is no secret, just lots of training and practice. That extends to life on the ISS. Oh, and alllll of the time spent repairing things is simply crazy. Takeaways include: time spent in preparation is not wasted, communication with loved ones is vital and can be challenging, and being part of a larger team committed to success is essential. I enjoyed hearing his voice reading the book, but speeding it up to 1.25% helped.

I loved this too - the best part is that astronaut Scott Kelly was practically an academic drop-out during high school and first semester of college. Then he read Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff. Suddenly, life had a purpose and Kelly had achievable, if he worked his butt off, goals. In this clear and compelling narrative, Kelly tells the story of his career as an astronaut - particularly his year on the International Space Station. It's a fascinating account of what humans can achieve when the world works together on a common goal.

I remember being in college when Scott Kelly was on his year long journey in space. One of my professors was working at NASA on one of the many scientific experiments that Kelly was helping to conduct. It was THE COOLEST THING to me. It was an exercise physiology class and we had a special unit on extreme environments on physiology - including zero gravity. These astronauts quite literally donate their body to science. It was really great to hear Scott Kelly's personal account of just how he felt and the unique descriptions of different sensations, smells, sounds, and visions of space.

He didn't go into quite so much detail about what experiments he was doing, or the exact physiological changes that happen in space. But he does talk about the physical toll he takes and the different things that play a part in that. In terms of the psychological toll, I think that is what he weighed most heavily on in the book. To me this was a book of reflection on his life and how he got here while he was stuck, literally, as far away from humanity as possible for an entire year.

what would you miss most if you were that far away? what little things would you suddenly realize you have taken for granted? how would you navigate complex relationships, made that much more complex by this strange circumstance? What is it like being in such close quarters all the time with no personal space? how do you pass the time? how do you make the most out of this experience? What the first thing you would do when you come back to earth? what is the one thing you hope doesnt happen on earth while you are in space? How TF did you get here in the first place?

Scott Kelly answers these questions, and so much more. With a militaristic bluntness and sense of humor filled with candor and absurdity, he comes across as someone you would want to sit down and grab a drink with.

Not as entertaining as some books by other astronauts, but gives the reader a really good understanding of the space program and the life of an astronaut.
