“The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us”
Can we take a moment to read that line over and over again … Just take a look at it and feel it.
That what this book did to me … feelings, and reading the lines written over and over again. Those beautiful written words. I honestly don’t think that I will ever encounter such beautiful writing with any other writer. This only happens with Jay Kristoff. You can never know or feel what I’m writing here until you experience those first lines in this book. It’s a struggle at first, but then you’re used to it and then you start diving emotionally in every word written in those pages.
I shall warn you, this book is not meant for the soft hearted ones, with its bloody scenes, killings, vengeance and explicit parts here and there. Those scenes are written in a way that they stick in your head like you have seen them with your own eyes. Trust me when I say, you’ll be living each chapter in this book as if you were inside those words with the characters.
The characters … From where do I begin?
Nevernight is filled with amazing characters, some you’ll love, some you’ll hate and some you’ll wish you can go inside the book so you slit their throats. I will not be talking here about the characters in details for I might spoil few things without me noticing but all I can say is that you’ll def fall in love with Mia and her loyal friends in this book. You’ll see how each character will leave its mark on you and how you will react with them all.
The story is about a girl called Mia, who witnesses the execution of her father infront of her own eyes when she was 10 years old, and then she swears she will avenge her father’s death. At the age 16, she joins The Red Church where she will learn to be a cold blooded assassin, but what she will find/go through in The Red Church will leave her wondering …. wondering about what?

Review revision time!
I really enjoyed this series. It's dark and gritty and contains one of my favorite things: female assassins. But it's time for some real talk.
I'm white, and as that comes with certain privileges and implicit biases, I didn't notice the problematic aspects of this series until I did a little research. The depiction of the Dweymeri (I forgot how it's spelled) as savages is very harmful, and there is also some poorly disguised antisemitism, not to mention the weird fetishization of wlw relationships. Kristoff has proven himself to be quite nasty about people pointing out his lack of representation and the like. So read this series if you want, but I recommend buying it second-hand and keep the prejudice in mind.

I did not like the prose of this book. The first chapter was so boring in the way it was written, and there are better and less obvious ways to draw parallel scenes together without writing them word for word.
From the first sex scene (in the first chapter) I got the sense that this was a woman written by a man in the absolute worst way. I have no interest in continuing this.
