Well, now that was tragic. I knew what the main story was about, but I'm not sure what I expected. Though, I can't say I'm surprised, given the fact that we're talking about ancient Greeks. I think reading more than one translation leads to a better understanding. I read Ian Johnston's translation and I will also try the text translated by Robert Fagles. Another reviewer said they preferred the latter after trying 4 different versions.

Intriguing afternoon read (been studying a bit and taking breaks to read some of Antigone).. I read Oedipus Rex yesterday, so this was an intriguing follow-up. The emotional extremes are fantastic. I love the courage, rashness even. Antigone is a fascinating character as a female at that time, and the themes are deep and striking.

The discourse is brilliant. The story is a story of great extremes: of passion and heartbreak, of joy and grief, of courage and cowardice, of life and death...

"Go if you think it’s right. Even though you act without sense, to your family you are truly dear.” -Ismene, Antigone, Sophocles

Truly a very well-done play. Oedipus was a more intriguing character overall, but the plot and philosophy of this play is interesting as well. Some of the dialogue and discourse might even have been better than in Oedipus Rex. I am quite glad to have stumbled across works of Sophocles.
