I liked this a lot! I'd never read a graphic novel before, but this was a great one to start out with. I can't wait to find and read the rest of them!

Three Bones, Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone, are run out of Boneville after Phoney Bone tries to pull a scam on the townspeople. They get separated in a desert. Fone Bone, the most honest of the bunch, eventually finds marooned in a beautiful valley. All is not as peaceful as it appears, however. There are rat creatures trying to eat Fone Bone and an enigmatic dragon who keeps saving his skin.

This has potential, but it didn't really get anywhere in this first installment. I had more questions when I finished it than I did when I started it. I can't think of one question that got answered. That's the biggest reason I rated this three stars.

I did like the artwork. It reminded me of the cartoons I watched as a child.

I don't really have anything else to say. I don't feel like I know enough about what's going on to add anything else.

Readers more patient than I am will probably like this more than I did. I just want to have something explained.

It's been at least 10 years since I read the Bone series, and I was delighted when I managed to find all the volumes at my used bookstore, prompting me to have a little spending spree and a re-reading. Going into the series a second time, having forgotten almost everything but that there is some larger, more epic plot than just a trio of lost marshmallow people, it's made me focus so much more closely on the little details.

I recall first reading snippets of these comics in the old Disney Adventures Magazine, and, let me tell you, they maybe should not have been there. Not that this is somehow raunchy or objectionable to the average reader, but it's just all too much. Why were we reading something so deep in little bits every month? I can hardly imagine the struggle of waiting for the full comic books once a month, now!

I'd advise the new reader to have all the books in the main series on hand before beginning. They go fast, and you will not want to stop, once you realize how deep of a story you're getting. I read five of these in a 24 hour period, and would have done more, if not for chores and sleep. I'm looking forward to finishing it all, and shoving the books at my friends until they all join me in bliss.

Hoping to re-read and collect this series into my collection. I have such fond memories reading them as a child that I wish to have them apart of my collection.

I hadn't read this book in more than ten years and was delighted to discover it now available in full colour. I was also delighted that it was just as good as I remembered it to be. #iwantquiche

SUMMARY: Phoney Bone has gotten himself into trouble for the last time, in Boneville at least. He's been exiled from his home, though his cousin Fone Bone helped him escape the wrath of the angry townspeople. Also along for the ride is another cousin, Smiley Bone. It isn't long before the Bone cousins become separated, and we follow Fone Bone's progress through the desert. He comes to a forest, is stalked and chased by evil rat creatures, is saved by a dragon, and meets a beautiful woman who offers to help him. Meanwhile, Phoney and Smiley are having their own adventures, and all three cousins meet again, though not before the evil rat creatures make another appearance!

EVALUATION: In form, the Bone cousins are somewhat reminiscent of a cross between Pogo and Casper the Ghost. Their personalities are all quite distinct, something that comes across in both the writing and the artwork. This book (and the others in the series) has many enjoyable elements that meld together in a perfect format: humor, mild romance (in the crush Fone Bone develops on his helper Thorn), fantasy adventures, good fighting against evil, and a number of entertaining, well-done characters.

WHY I WOULD INCLUDE IT: Bone has appeal for a wide variety of ages, from young kids to adults, with plenty for tweens to enjoy. I prefer the colored version to the black and white, as I feel it adds to the action and the overall mood of the chapters. The depth of the characters, the wondrous artwork, the attention to details (such as the variety of speech balloons, depending on the tone of what is being said) and the hunger you have for more when you reach the end all make it a terrific addition to a new graphic novel collection for tweens.

Read it as a kid and wanted to read it again. It just felt kinda boring. Maybe the later books are better though. I also hate hate HATE the trope of 'main character is some non human creature and falls in love with a human woman' thing. Just stop.
