I've heard a lot about Bone from friends. I thought it was time to check it out. I'm glad I did. Now I need to get the next volume.

Bone is an indie fantasy comic first published, in black and white, in 1991. I remember seeing issues as a kid, but somehow never read one until now. Too bad for me!! While I turned the last page with far more questions than answers about the Cousins Bone and their wonky, anachronistic world, each page along was turned with anticipation and delight. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Age recommendation: All Ages

Bone is one of the greatest comic books/graphic novels ever written, and one of it's best attributes is that it's truly for all ages. A 6 year old who is advanced enough to be able to read it, will enjoy it just as much as a 35 year old. The art is simple, but effective, and the epic fantasy story will enthrall anyone. The book is often challenged in schools and libraries due to one character's occasional cigar smoking, and a bar setting where characters drink an unnamed beverage in a glass, but there's no reason why anyone shouldn't read and enjoy.

This is a beloved series in my classroom and I have always wanted to read it- I am glad I did, but I really think that I would have loved it so much more if I was a 12 year old. I knew there was humor in there, but once again it is a humor that I would have loved even more if I was a 12 year old. The story was quite interesting- Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone, 3 cousins, have left Boneville, but get separated. Fone Bone ends up at Thorn's house (a sweet, beautiful young girl), but he is being chased by rat monsters and protected by a dragon. He must find his cousins and escape these terrifying monsters.

Cousins Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone are run out of their home in Boneville due to Phoney's scheming ways. When they are separated, Fone Bone turns to his new friends, including Thorn, her grandmother, and a dragon, to help him reunite with his cousins, fight the evil rat creatures, and find a way home to Boneville. The first in a series of graphic novels, Out from Boneville leaves the reader eager to see what will happen next. The illustrations are simple and friendly, making this a good, accessible first graphic novel. The story has a strong plot and character development. Fans of adventure fantasy stories like Lord of the Rings might enjoy this book.

The republished 10th anniversary edition also includes special features: original covers, tribute art, maps, and more.

I read this mostly because it was recommended for my daughter, but also because I never had. I can't really say for sure that it is appropriate for a 7-year old, but then again, she loves [a:Raina Telgemeier|21618|Raina Telgemeier|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1200153437p2/21618.jpg], and I probably should have checked those out first too.

It is a cute story, interesting enough and basic. The art is fantastic. If it appeals to the child I will undoubtedly end up buying the series (or at least renting).
