This was an incredible read. The slow build of tension at the beginning gave the plot real emotional weight, and the ending had me sobbing. I was really glad that
Daunis and Jamie didn’t end up together, giving Daunis some control and agency in a situation with a massive power imbalance

That got intense! I didn't read the description of this book before diving in, so everything that happened was a surprise. I really enjoyed this read, and loved the characters. I especially enjoyed getting to know Daunis and seeing how herany worlds connected and guided her through being an informant in her quest to take out the meth destroying her community.

While I didn’t find myself hooked on this book like other people, I want to emphasize that this is a high quality read that discusses very important topics. Boulley captures the struggles of Native Americans post 2000. Firekeeper’s Daughter addresses everything from the increased risk of sexual and violent crimes against Natives (especially women), drug abuse, the micro-aggressions performed by non-Natives, the discrimination of Natives towards “lesser” Natives, and the lack of support by the government and law enforcement. Each of these issues are still prevalent within tribal communities today, so it is extremely important that Boulley is drawing further attention to the issue. With multiple relatives and friends that still live on tribal land and follow their traditional rules, I have heard growing concern about everyone of these issues. The  fear of Native parents for their children’s safety is heartbreaking, as I know many of them are stuck worrying if their children (especially their daughters) will be victimized for a wide variety of reasons.  Did you know that Native Americans statistically are more likely to develop alcohol and drug addiction? This is believed to be partially because of the targeting of Native communities by dealers and manufacturers, and this is worsened by the traumas inflicted upon Natives both within their tribal communities and outside ones alike. I think this could easily be a 4-star read for most people, and this would be one way for teachers to have some important discussions with their students.

firekeepers daughter  🤝the indigenous Canada MOOC

How seamlessly Boulley was able to weave together the book with Indigenous teachings is amazing. I don’t even know if that’s right as the  cultural teachings are so vital to the story and the characters and make this book so amazing.

Every once and a while I read a book that I think should be read in high school because of the story, the writing, the themes, and characters and this is one of them.

This cover is amazing! This story is amazing! I know that we are just half through the year, but I know that this is going to be my favorite book from 2022. This story starts kinda slow, but when it gets momentum, is a very fast read until the end.

I love Daunis, the girl that is between worlds, she is strong, stubborn and knows exactly what she wants. Stepping up to defend a community that don't look at her as equal, she does everything to take care of everyone, even to her own costs. The story is brilliantly written, the bad is very well balanced with the good. For every bad action committed by a character, there is a act of love somewhere else. For every heartbreak that Daunis is put through, there is a act of kindness to even out.

More than the story, this book brings us knowledge about (some) Indigenous culture, and that was my favorite part. I went online to learn the meaning of words, specific dances and prayers and I took a lot of notes. Angeline Boulley also writes about some troubles faced by this Indigenous communities: drugs, death and the non-stoping sexual violence towards native women. But she doesn't do it in a "let's shock readers" way... the fact is that things like the ones Angeline's writes about keep happening, and seems like no one (outside the communities) cares that much.

I learned so much from this book! I want to read it again.
