I think it's mostly me, I have to accept mysteries are just not for me. I can't tell you if the book is boring and predictable and the pacing doesn't make sense and the characters sometimes seem so out of character etc etc because that might have been me being done with the genre. at least partly, that is. it was easy to read tho, so there's that.
the biggest asset of this book for me was the huge part that played the MC's indigenous American heritage. absolutely loved that and I wish there were more stories with such deep and loving portrayal of an indigenous culture.

it's a good book!! for my tastes though the descriptions were a bit too extensive sometimes. also the last 100 pages or so... i just did not love the way the story got resolved. it was fine but although i have never seen riverdale this is what i imagine it must be like

This story is about  Daunis who was born and raised in between two worlds and is set in 2004. She goes undercover to help the FBI investigate a lethal mix of meth. Turns out it's a lot more complicated and intense than she could have ever imagined.

Learning about the native Ojibwe tribal traditions, life and laws was pretty great and really interesting. I love it, when native languages are used and translated, which helps the reader learn.
What I didn't like and don't understand why it was necessary in an already tense book was the sexual assault.
Check TW and CW if you're interested in reading this.

What a page-turner! I needed to know more. I appreciated the story's invitation into the lives of indigenous folks on a reservation and learning more about Anishnaabe language and culture. I found
her brother being involved in the drug ring predictable because Daunis idolized him the whole time, even when he was evidently shitty in some ways. I also found Daunis's experience of grief to fall flat partially, but I'm no expert on how people process grief. It's just that as a reader I didn't really feel her grief very strongly, or find it particularly sad when Lily died, since we barely got to know her beforehand. I also really wanted to find out what was going on with the Little People but they never reappeared.
