Read TW before reading. This is about Daunis having a mental battle on wondering if she is doing the correct thing, if helping investigate her community that has now been suffering losses due to an increase in drug use.

ummmmmmm..... wow. Honestly I cant get over how good this book was. I think that some books stay with you for a long time, but I know that this book will stay with me forever. I loved the mystery and plot twists, but I fell in love with this book for the characters.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. Overall, I enjoyed Firekeeper’s Daughter and would recommend it as a more advanced YA read. There were things that I absolutely adored about it, and some things that I just didn’t enjoy as a reader. Without further ado… a pros and cons list.

PROS ❤️

•The exploration of Native American culture, particularly the experiences of women, was exquisite. The “local informs the new guy” plot was such an immersive and informative means of delivering information.

•This book, particularly the second half, was a true page turner. The cliff hanger chapters had me flipping through this book on the edge of my seat.

CONS ⭐️

•I did not like the protagonist as a narrator. Being that this was written in first person, the fact that I was not fond of her put a bit of a damper on my reading. She was a book smart know it all type, and the obsessive stating of scientific facts in dialogue and internal monologue felt forced and was irritating to me as a reader. She also gave many characters long winded nicknames and would refer to them as such any time she was thinking about them. As a character, I felt neither wildly good nor bad about her. As a narrator, she is not one I would want to read again.

•I think that over 150 pages could have been cut from this book without any real damage to the plot. The pace of the first 2/3 of the book was trudging, though it was redeemed with a snappy ending.
