This is A24’s type on paper.

I was expecting this to be more like Daisy Jones and instead this read a bit more Cleopatra and Frankenstein in its literary structure, but a very speedy read which was just what I needed. I did listen to the songs that they talked about as I read the chapters and that was SO fun, especially the Summer in New York montage with Sam Cooke playing.

I will be sat when this comes to the cinema, especially to see my gal Saoirse, as I think watching this will translate better for me (ie punch me in the gut)

A bit shocked at how much I enjoyed this. The first ~80 pages had me a bit worried about the characters and dynamics, especially since the dialogue from the main character is a little too easy for the lack of close social connections she mentions repeatedly as feeding into the origin of her dynamic with Joe and Zoe, but the rest of the book really developed in a satisfying way. Romance isn’t always my genre, but the way that it felt as though the romance was a backdrop to everything else artistic and interpersonal in the main character’s life made me feel far more attached and interested in what was going on. And I must echo other reviewers: I LOVE the way Brickley writes about music!

"That’s why the song was so short, I decided—because connection, like memories, came in the briefest of flashes." I can't wait to see Saoirse Ronan play Percy and watch 2 hours of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks breakup tension on the big screen my god

only holly brickley’s first book and she did it so well! i have so many new songs to play on repeat and that will forever be intertwined with this story. i’ve been humming “sara smile” & “surfs up” far too much i’m becoming annoying.

fun book for music lovers! kinda wish she didn’t end up with
joe
but whatever. it works i guess. such a cute meet cute! i love stories about friends just hanging out so i loved the first bit.. and a bit of the middle. cause why the hell wouldn’t you take e from a random girl at a bar? it’s 2005!

you know that feeling when you finish a book and you feel like a completely different person? queue “NYC” by Interpol and the credits fade to black…
