I read this with my 9 yr old (as part of her class assignment) - and really enjoyed it much more than I thought I would! The author's writing of this entire story from the perspective of a DOG is funny, touching, so insightful! If dogs could talk, they would talk/think just. like. this!
3 starts only because it wasn't my usual cup of tea, but nonetheless, it is a great book to deviate to from my usual cup of tea!

Stella suffers from ptsd and the loss of her human after missing the scent of an explosive at an airport. The book is told from her point of view and I think Hoyle did a wonderful job in portraying her. She felt so real and I absolutely loved her. I even cried about five times.
The story is very wholesome, full of love and hope. There’s an underlying message that every dog deserves another chance but I think it can also be taken into a context where everyone and anyone deserves a second chance as well. This is perfect for any readers of all age and I do think the underlying message is lovely. I plan on buying a copy of this for my shelf when it is published.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing and Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Such a sweet story of Stella the bomb sniffing dog trying to find her place after she has been released from her duties following a tragic accident. This is a perfect middle grade book especially for students who love animals, as it’s told from the perspective of Stella the beagle. Another great book by McCall Hoyle!
Kid Lit - I'm so glad I found this author and this book when searching for middle grade books with dogs. I was cheering on Stella from page one. The message for Stella to learn, "You must do the think you cannot do" by Eleanor Roosevelt, is one all kids should learn.
This was a DNF for our family. We listened to it on audiobook and it was so very slow and so very sad. My kids (10 & 8) were quite sensitive to what the poor pup went through, me too. We liked that it gave a little insight into what a dog may think, but it was really depressing.
This book was never going to be for me. Normally that would get a 3 star rating because it's not the author's fault that I read a book I knew I wouldn't really enjoy (it's on the MCBA) BUT I found Stella annoyingly naive for a dog that had been through so much. So it only gets 2. For me, it was a 1 star read.
Nominated book for 2023-24 William Allen White Award for 3rd-5th Graders.
Because I can get through books faster, I listened to this as an audiobook. The voice actor was wonderful, as this book is told from the perspective of Stella, the beagle, in this book.
While targeted to elementary age kids, I absolutely LOVED this book. It kept my interest the entire book, making me, an adult, want to know what was going to happen next!!! I love animals, and the subject of this book was interesting as well.

I love a great dog story. Stella the beagle tells how she finds a new home and purpose with Cloe, after tragically losing her first person, Connie. Great lesson on not letting mistakes define our lives, perseverance, and overcoming difficulties. Unique perspective as Stella is the narrating voice.
