Listened to this with me 6 year old daughter who begged for more, and screamed and squeezed my hand, and shouted for Stella to remember what Connie said. She gives is 67 stars. And we've been playing Stella for the last 15 minutes, which consists of her alerting and me telling her she's a good girl.
I read this book with my 9 and 10 year old boys and we all loved it. I cried, and my heart broke for Stella and the trauma she experienced. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get through the whole book bc there is something about animals having bad things happen to them that absolutely breaks my heart, but I was reassured that it has to have a happy ending. Stella is absolutely darling and I loved that she narrated the story. As a dog person, I narrate my dogs thoughts all of the time and giggles many times throughout even the most intense moments when her thoughts were directed to food or other "dog priorities". I love that The book embraced The story of Chloe and her epilepsy. What a powerful topic to cover, and the author did such a great job demystifying epilepsy and what that means for a child and their family. The last 5 chapters had me choked up and misty-eyed, and also grinning ear to ear. Overall, it was such a great book and I'm so glad I got to read it with my kids. #GFPublicSchools #ELBABooks2023-2024

All of the SSYRA and Teen Reads I've been reading have been hard for me to rate right off in the moment, but this one was especially difficult. Still, while others I've toyed with changing after a review I know for certain this one is sticking.

A very beautiful and heartbreaking book that has some important universal truths that apply to humans as well as our doggy hero.
A traumatized working dog has been in three foster homes since the death of her handler. She is sent to live in the country with other working dogs, a cat, and sheep. Here she meets Chloe and gets a second chance at being the dog hero she was trained to be. Told entirely from the dog's point of view, this will appeal to dog lovers. So not me.

This comes from an adult rating a book meant for a children's audience. I'm clearly not who this book was meant for. However, adult me enjoyed this three stars worth.
This does not affect my rating but was a huge annoyance. I downloaded Stella and another book (How to Steal a Dog) based off of the titles and cute images on the front. These were hurried downloads before a long car ride with kids ranging from ages 5-11.
How to Steal a Dog was about a homeless family living in a car. We quickly moved on from that one. Stella involved serious topics including terrorism, death and PTSD. I should have looked closer into these books... I was disappointed and annoyed not to find the light and fun read I wanted for a mixed age group.
3 Stars.
