A thriller that could have been better.
With amazing character development and an interesting plot, this book is a great debut.
I did feel that the book would have benefitted from a bit more of the brisk writing that is evidenced in bursts here and there.

Like a few other reviewers I found this book a little confusing and hard to follow at times and because of this it took a while to get into the story. The characters are unlikable and some issues regarding the main character are over done. However, there are elements here that kept me turning the pages, there is some good writing here with tension working well.
The plot is rather convoluted but ultimately you can see where things are headed if you are a regular crime/thriller reader.

Mysteries are outside of my comfort zone, so it took me a bit to warm up to this twisty tale, but eventually I couldn't put it down. Jack Quick isn't quite a fully reliable protagonist, as his director's eye is constantly casting people in roles as though for the crime show he became famous for, but he's messy, complicated, and trying to do the right thing after his show possibly let a killer loose. Not a typical read for me, but I enjoyed the ride.

Trigger warnings: murder, blood, violence, gun violence, death, eating disorder, vomit, serious injury to a family member (in the past), death of a parent (in the past).

The concept of this is SO FREAKING COOL - TV producer making a show about a murder case helps get the suspected killer out of jail and then realises that maybe he's made a mistake. But I felt like the case often faded into the background in favour of discussions about the nature of the town and, more significantly, Jack's eating disorder.

While it's significant to have a story featuring not only a male protagonist with an eating disorder, but a male protagonist IN HIS FORTIES with an eating disorder, after a while it sort of began to feel like everything else was taking a backseat to Jack thinking about food and whether to eat or not and debating purging and OMG I DID NOT EXPECT THAT IN A THRILLER (and I also felt like it didn't really need to be in a thriller to the extent that it was...).

So yeah. I thought I would love this, but I just found it hard going for the most part. Sigh.
