An Ember in the Ashes completely pulled me in — I loved, hated, and felt every character. The story unraveled in such intense, emotional layers, and with all its grit, hope, and heart, it gave me everything I didn’t know I was looking for.

Loved reading this book. Fun. Descriptive. Surprising. Yup, will read the next one.

Laia's idiocy and weakness is exhausting. She is the only reason I had to dislike this book. Zero sense and absolutely unrealistic she made it to 17 years of age. Even though she is a "main protagonist", she really didn't feel like it in that she was rather insignificant in this book in the grand scheme of things. Thankfully other characters really stood out for me.

Nonetheless, most other things about this book I enjoyed and I am looking forward to the next installment.

I was ELATED that Izzi made it out!

Much of this book just happened without any explanation. You have to be okay with going along for the ride and not understanding why. Not every little detail is explained and I kind of like that.

This was a really fun read. I liked the characters and their relationships and growth. It was fun to see where they went with it all. I’ll read the next one.

Great audio narrator, bad at the whole "book" concept.

This is misery porn lite. That is, it's a terrible and cruel world with a tortured main character who does not appear to deserve the horrors inflicted upon them (and the horrors keep coming). Our MCs blame themselves for everything, feel irrational guilt and are pushed by fate into weird romantic situations.

The "lite" part is that everything kind of works out like you would expect from a cliche adventure novel.

The audio narration was truly spectacular, which is what kept me reading. Otherwise, 1 star.

Finally got around to reading this, and it's very, very dark, almost unrelentlessly so. But the stakes are high and the characters' struggles very compelling, so I sped through this in a couple of days (also spurred by the need to finish in time for book club). Although I usually get frustrated by series entries that don't wrap up everything, I thought this did enough to conclude a portion of the story, plus it promises some wonderful character conflicts, both romantic and antagonistic. Will definitely check out the next in the series.

I enjoyed this story a lot and I liked the fantasy take it had. The characters were interesting at the time though a little forgettable now that I've had some distance. I would like to continue with the series but I don't have any strong opinions about this book so I wouldn't really care either way.
