About 65% in, I cried so hard. I didn’t expect this to hit so hard but the FMC’s “condition” was heart breaking, literally.

I highlighted so many parts of this book because it really just stuck with me. I haven’t read a book in awhile where the leading man was literal sunshine in so long and Connor was exactly that. Connor and Aaliyah have such a beautiful story that comes full circle and if anyone deserves it, it’s these two.

I know this is supposed to be a super angsty book which I was expecting and was excited for. But I can't describe the feeling of disappointment I got when it fell through. I was searching for a really amazing book to read so I picked this one because a book by Brittainy C. Cherry will definitely bring anyone to their knees.

The book started and it portrayed Aliyah as an avid comic book reader, I was so excited! Because I am into comics myself and I love MARVEL. And yes, Captain America! My heart just couldn't take it anymore. When I realized the guy in the Cap costume was the hero, I thought it would be my next fav book. Well, famous last words. Anyways, so Connor ( Cap) and Aliyah decide to hang out the rest of the night because they can connect to each other so well. Both were well acquainted with grief and for a night they wanted to be each other's reprieve from a sad and lonely life. More Aliyah than Connor because she recently went through a bad breakup. Both of them were young and not in a place to start relationships so they decide to take this one night and not reveal each other's names. They go to these random places and eat and talk and have so much fun together. By the end of the night, they were not ready to let go but that was the deal, fall in love for one night only.

I loved how they both connected on an emotional level. There was nothing sexual about their experience. Yes, they were attracted to each other but they didn't even kiss. I liked how their connection was brought on an emotional level rather than a physical one. I liked how kind Connor was and wanted to bring happiness to people's lives. I liked how quiet Aliyah was and felt sad that she was so desperate for a family. So I thought when they meet each other next, imagine the amount of angst when she is engaged to his business partner and their heart are both torn apart by their pull towards each other. Does that happen? Absolutely not. See, that's where the story went wrong. the blurb is totally misleading in saying that the story takes place while she's getting married to Jason and now Aliyah and Connor have a forbidden attraction. Hell, she's not even engaged to that loser for five minutes!

Connor and Aliyah meet at her engagement party, but they act as if they didn't spend an entire night knowing each other. I didn't feel that emotional effect. How would I when the book was busy in making Jason the ultimate asshole? Connor knew he was a piece of shit yet he didn't do anything effective to let Aliyah know. He just waited for the wedding. And Aliyah, oh god I felt like slapping her now. She became a whiny girl, crying at everything. Jason jilted her because he was not ready and the waterworks don't just stop. She was so desperate for a family that she agreed to marry this guy. I wanted her to be a stronger person, to stand up for herself and kick Jason's butt. But no, she was in denial. And the story progresses to get much worse. She decides to move in with Connor because she's homeless. They share these cute moments which honestly I didn't care for. And oh, not to mention another complication in the plot, Aliyah has a heart defect and she's dying.

When Connor got to know about her impending death, he's like I can't watch her die so he fled. He had to watch his mother suffer from cancer his entire childhood so he doesn't want to feel the pain when Aliyah dies. Genius. He was a good guy until that moment and then he was plain stupid. And the other plot additions. They just made the story messy and disconnected at the end.

Thoughts:
1) I didn't like this book. More so because I expected it to be great.

2) I didn't feel the chemistry between the characters after their first meeting. Everything was flat. Probably that's the reason I failed to experience that angst that it supposedly had.

3) It was supposed to be a forbidden romance

4) The climax of the book came when Connor found out about her condition and left. Even then, I didn't feel the heartbreaking emotion due to their breakup. Actually, I don't know what was the climax. The book just kept revealing newer details in each chapter that I am really confused.

5) Jason and his parents were assholes. And what a shitty way to make them play the villain. Jason was a class A jerk with zero personality. Marie was a despicable person for trying to push Aliyah( her own daughter) with Jason despite knowing how horrible he was. Walter was a cheater, in his personal and professional life, and Marie was an idiot for staying with him. The book wasted so many words making these characters seem so bad that they overshadowed the emotional development in the main characters. I don't know if I was supposed to be busy hating them or getting invested in the MCs' lives.

6) Again, weak chemistry between MCs.

7) No angst.

8) Unnecessary drama

9) I am sad because I wanted this to be my next fav book.

10) Brittainy C. Cherry can write angsty stories so well. What the heck happened here? I loved [b:Loving Mr. Daniels|20348781|Loving Mr. Daniels|Brittainy C. So why did this book fail to deliver the same emotions? I swear I have a hate/love relationship with her books.

But yeah, I'll keep reading her books until I find another perfect book.
