3.5 stars. This would be my favourite of the three, but still, I found some parts rather dull. However, there were more parts in this that held my attention compared to the first two. So overall, I quite enjoyed it.

The first half was better than the last half but this was a really good fantasy series and I love Mara as our mc - I could read more stories about her.

The authors first provide a moment of respite for Mara of the Acoma after everything she's been through in the two earlier books. And then almost cruelly create event after event of catastrophe in ever frequent waves. The conclusion is mostly anticipated (although with a deus ex machina moment) but it does wrap up all remaining threads.

A beautiful and fitting end to an incredible series. We really see how everything Mara has achieved in all the books comes down to her desire to save her tiny little place in the world. The level of detail and fore-thought evident in this series is outstanding. It is a beautiful series and it deserves a spot on everyone's shelf.

A wonderful conclusion to the story of Mara in the Riftwar Cycle. She is one of my favourite heroines using her wits and great mine to best her enemies while being led by her heart and conscience.

I love how the plot twists and turns and the Empire of Tsuranuani itself is like a character that changes for the better.

This is the last in the trilogy of Mara of the Acoma. I’ve waited to read it for a long time—it was slow to gain my interest despite a death within the first few pages, but once I got into it—which was well before page 100, it was very gripping. In this book, Mara takes on her old enemy, the Asati, plus the assassins guild and finally the magicians, who are the ultimate power in the nation. Of course by this point in the series you know Mara will triumph in the end—but the journey is the thing.

2020 note: Although Raymond Feist is the more well-known author, who has written a long series about the cross-world-gate enemies of Mara’s people, I have never been able to get into that series.

It ended on a very soapy note again.

These books always take me so long to read, this one took the longest because I didn't want it to end.
I've now finished the Mara books! and that is a sad thing.
I spent the last few chapters crying and more than once a wail or a laugh escaped me in public while I was reading this book.
