I really wanted to like this book and for the first few chapters I did. After that it became almost a chore to finish and I read a bit here and there when I had a few minutes. This would have been a good magazine article but it started feeling like it was as much a struggle for the author to fill the space as it was for me to keep reading. I kept thinking she must have seen the John Cusack movie"High Fidelity"and decided to use the idea for a walk down her own relationship memory lane.

Yawn!! That was a big waste of my time and the only redeeming thing about it was that it got me to hurry up and finish so I could get back to reading the Outlander series, #4. I hate books where the author tries to be cutesy funny and it's just not. I especially got a bad taste in my mouth when I realized after her lamenting the "I can't have a baby" blues that she threw away two chances to be a mom~in my opinion, she doesn't deserve the honor, sorry.

A fun book -- I read it to review for the newspaper. Wouldn't have picked it up otherwise. But it was entertaining. The book -- and author -- were quite self-indulgent, I thought, and I was a bit appalled at how self-centered she was, but it was rather entertaining.

It's hard to rate a memoir well when you don't end up liking the writer much. Well written and in many places very clever and enjoyable. I'd love to write a similar book, or read one at least, about someone who I find more likeable

I'd really like to give it 2.5 stars. A quick read, but the author was frequently unlikeable.

A writer's self exploration of past and current relationships. Interesting to read her process.

Another neurotic, weight-obsessed (she often refers to women by their sizes), competitive New Yorker. With baby lust (and competitive feelings around that). Not a bad read, but not a great one.

I first bought this after a break up, and although it's not the most amazing memoir I've ever read I return to it time and again. (And not necessarily after break ups, either!)

Sue Shapiro decides to seek out five old boyfriends and chit-chat with them about their lives now and what went wrong all those years ago. Her somewhat absent husband is side-lined throughout most of the book, coming in every now and then leaving you wondering if he'll have a bigger part in the story somehow. There are lots of flashbacks to the times she was dating each man and she describes some common relationship problems and habits. It's a bit of self-discovery and comedy rolled into one...after all she gives each of them a nickname and then you get to find out why that one was for them. It's a pretty quick read, not too full of character development or an actual storyline, but enough to keep your attention...it's by no means as good as "Straight Up and Dirty".
