This book had a lot of whimsy on a Miyazaki like journey. While the book aped studio Ghibli it over explained what was happening instead of embracing the weirdness. There are also a lot of fake outs where we get to an ending and then there’s a forced feeling twist. Overall still enjoyable

this book was enjoyable but it had some things that I just could not look past.

the first and biggest issue was the pacing of the story. This is a story that kept getting more and more complex and became incredibly rushed. i was pretty confused with all the things going on because they just did not feel fleshed out and random plot points kept getting brought up and then pushed off to the side.

my second biggest issue was the romance. sorry, but why is a 16 year old girl falling in love with a god who is thousands of years old?? could the author not have aged her up to her twenties or what? this is giving off predator vibes. also, the romance was incredibly rushed as well. Mina only spent 30 days in the spirit world, meaning they were fully IN LOVE within a month. Ma’am what?? And then she leaves her entire family at the end because of a guy she knew for a MONTH?? It’s ridiculous!!!!

Also, I don’t understand how every single character just was so INSPIRED and “changed” by Mina. There was no character development. It’s like we don’t even get to really KNOW any of the characters, really. It’s so rushed that it’s unrealistic to have any character development if we don’t even know anything about the characters.

I did enjoy the whole idea of the story and the plot was interesting and I liked it. It was a quick read, which I liked. The plot was really entertaining and I had such a positive reading experience with this book.

I love, love, love this book!! It's giving.... Spirited Away! A very easy read but not in a dumb way. The plot is simple to follow but the author doesn't spoon feed you the answers. Even if it is romance driven, it doesn't stray away from the mysteries, and it doesn't fall into those awkward scenes some romantasy books tend to have. It is seamless and easy to catch on even when one is not familiar with Korean folklore.

The only thing I do not love about this book is the ending...it felt...flat? Very quick paced and it felt off after all the pining and longing and waiting, but the ending felt cut short. But overall the story is wonderful and whimsical.
