I am fascinated by how intricately this plot weaves together three generations of family. While the characters are lovable, they’re hard to pin down and just barely lacked something for me. There was a lot of describing how they “always” behaved, and not as much showing, and that might be it. But the plot absolutely made it well worth the read. Race plays an important role in the narrative, and Bennett dives in with tact, nuance, and clarity. It wasn’t one of those books that I was completely unable to put down, but when I wasn’t reading it, I found myself still thinking about it—and that’s a sign for me that it’s a good book that has me hooked.

A ler, definitivamente.

While I had trouble getting into the first 30 percent of the book, I found it difficult to put down for the last 70. The settings were descriptive, the characters were people I could remember if I simply closed my eyes. Brit Bennett does an immaculate job flowing between points of view, sometimes switching so swiftly that I have to go back to see who's narrating. I felt enraptured by the multiple story lines once I got used to the smooth switches in POV.
I'm looking forward to reading more of Bennett's work in the future!

I liked this book, but sadly didn't like it as much as I had hoped. This was a story where the timeline jumps around a lot. Also, the story is told from multiple perspectives and follows a couple generations of characters. This is the second time I've read a story following multiple family members throughout the years, and I think it's something that is hard for me to read. I'd rather read a book from one perspective and get their full story, or multiple perspectives at the same time.
One thing I appreciate about this book is how realistic it is. The characters felt like real people with real flaws. I had hoped Stella would attend her mother's funeral. But, knowing the characters, it is more true to Jude and Kennedy's characters that they wouldn't tell her.
