I dare you to find me a better book about forgiveness and redemption. Two of my absolute favorite things about this book is how it covers every day issues and its written by B. Celeste..
In this story you have the typical childhood best friends who grew up living next door. Aiden has always been Ivy's protector, her calm during a storm, and her rock. Ivy is the chaos to everyone, except for the people who truly accept her. Aiden always had a happy and loving home to go home to where as Ivy has a broken home, one where she saw police so much that the color purple became her favorite color..
Aiden is the big hotshot football player and the one who is projected to go pro. But never once does he come off as that during any part of this book, but rather comes off as the selfless person who puts every other persons happiness above his own. He is willing to take on the world if it means someone he cares about is genuinely happy. He battles his own demons, but never once makes it known to others.
Ivy is just a hard character to read about. I think its because of how much she had to face before given the opportunity to grown up. First she feels unloved by her family, so much so that her own mom calls her the chaos in everyone's life. Then she runs away and has to do unimaginable things just to survive life, or to try to harm herself in hopes that someone would care. Then by fate she shows up to the same college that Aiden and is given a second chance at life. She finds a job where her boss takes her under her wing and treats her like her own. She found a place to live by herself and pay for with the money she makes. But something is still holding her back, It takes Aiden walking into the bakery and inserting himself in her life to make her realize she needs to forgive herself for the past and move forward. Fast forward to the end of the book and you read about how she finally gets along with her family, she is doing what she loves, and is getting the help she realizes she needed.. not to mention she is soon to be married to Aiden.
If Aiden had a theme song it would be "Rescue by Lauren Daigle", I feel like he is the one to rescue Ivy, and will continue to until his last breath.
*******
The one thing I love about B. Celeste is how authentic she makes all of her books feel. She writes about every day issues but she doesn't glorifies it like most authors do. This book is a prime example of that, she writes about self harm in a way that its more educational then emotional. You read about what leads up to deciding to start and what leads up trying to succumb to the demons. You also read what happens when ones only hope to survive is a form prostitution. You also read about the effect it has on someone after going through that. With this book, make sure to check trigger warnings as some topics could be hard to read.

If you like books where the characters have cringey nicknames and catchphrases controlling annoying and condescending characters then you'll love this book. Also if you like eyes being referred to as "orbes" 🙄🙄
