Jake wasn't able to save her when she needed him most and somehow he continued to let her down when he thought he was doing what was best for her. He never stopped loving her, but keeping her safe was always his biggest priority. Years later she's back to honor their teenage pact and she almost safe enough to stay. But letting her go now isn't an option, he loves her too much. But can she forgive him? Can he forgive himself? And can he keep her safe?

This was my first Pam Godwin book and it definitely won't be my last. I won't lie, this one was definitely different from the books I typically read, the characters definite have some morally grey attributes that I wasn't sure about, but I loved the way Pam handled such heavy subject matter. I appreciate that the characters were true to themselves and didn't shy away from their wants and needs. I loved the way Jake wanted to help Conor and that helping her was always his focus. And I love that he never saw her as broken or irrevocably changed from her experiences. I'm genuinely curious about the rest of this series and Pam's other work.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the following, but would highly encourage everyone to look into trigger/content warnings.

✔️ Friends to Lovers
✔️ Second Chance
✔️ Dark Romance
✔️ Western
✔️ Small Town
✔️ First Person Dual POV
❕️ Trigger/Content Warnings: Rape, Abuse, Violence

I wasn't really prepared for how brutal it would be so quickly into the book, but that intensity did set the tone for the rest of it and I liked how strong the feelings were. Their connection meant it was both heartbreaking and beautiful and while there was a lot of it that was unrealistic it kept my attention enough to be very entertained.

I did not read the blurb or trigger warnings and am not in the right head space for something this dark at the moment

If I don’t like a book, I simply put it down so this book falls in a bit of an odd place for me. Pam Godwin is a great writer. The pacing, the plot and the descriptions had me in the story the entire time. And I am a dark romance reader so dark and disturbing content doesn’t feel hard for me to read but this did.

I can read about character’s killing and torturing but apparently a character “googling” therapy and essentially forcing exposure therapy on the traumatized female main character is too much for me.

I was engaged in the revenge plot and I really liked the fmc but when this “therapy” plotline was introduced and the love interest ignored her hard no’s I did not enjoy it. I think there is a probably a huge audience for this book but personally for me, this book wasn’t it.
Content Warnings: Graphic rape on page. Both recounted by fmc and through first hand account by mmc forced to witness it. Bad kink practices. Discussion of CNC. Rape porn.

MMC can help “heal” the FMC because he read extensively online about trauma therapy? Dude, you’re 19, 20 at most. You’re not a licensed anything to be administering any sort of therapy or guidance. (Especially whatever it is you’re doing here!!) And you had your own issues to work through which was never touched on. Just…ugh. What an entire miss.

Pam Godwin just sends me. Every time. This book, like her others, destroyed me many times over and somehow managed to win me too.
I will say that the emotions when things were 'good' didn't quite counter the intensity of the angst and emotions when things weren't so good. It tapered off a bit. Or it somehow felt a little anticlimactic.
I really loved it though.
Read Pam Godwin when you want to feel things!
