Biggest thanks to Penguin Random House South Africa for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I’ve read most of Karen M. McManus’s books, and this one is, without a doubt, my favourite. In this book, we follow Brynn, who has an obsession with true crime. When she moves back to her old hometown, she uses it as an advantage to look into what really happened when her favourite teacher died many years ago. This gets complicated when she runs into Tripp, her old best friend and one of the students who found their teacher’s body.
I think the fact that we only follow two POVs in this book made me much more invested in it, because we got to spend so much time with both Tripp and Brynn, and we got to see them develop separately as well as together. The true crime aspect of it also made it a lot of fun and definitely added a unique touch to the story.
This is a YA thriller, and as with most books in this genre, I think you need to suspend your disbelief a bit to enjoy the story, but overall, I think the plot was great. There was a good balance between mystery and solving of the mystery, and there were so many moving parts to the story that every time the reader learns something new, they also start to wonder about a different aspect of the story.
Overall, while it wasn’t a flawless book, I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. It’s a quick and easy read and I think most people would enjoy it, whether they are already established fans of the YA mystery genre or simply looking for a place to start.

I love KM’s writing of teenagers and her plots are tight. The pacing of this one seemed too fast and the story was not very interesting. Maybe it needed more characters? 3.5 rounding up because I have read all 6 of her books and this was my least favorite but it was still an enjoyable read.
