An reread and still enjoyable
I won this version from Goodreads. I really appreciate Ms. Jenkins stories. I love reading about the Black love and Historic facts. I truly wish I could be transported into the story to find my love match. Even, if I didn’t find a love match just the supportive, loving and caring Black family, friends and community. I like the fact that the love making part are not too long or graphic because I don’t enjoy reading porn. This story and like other stories I have read by Ms. Jenkins does discuss pain and hardship but it’s not the focus or plot. Just Black people living their lives.

I feel like four stars isn't entirely fair because every "problem" I had with this book is entirely due to personal preference--I like my romances funnier than this (there was dialogue that made me laugh, to be clear! When it wanted to be funny, it was), and I don't read very much heterosexual romance in general. Neither of those things is the book's fault, and I did enjoy it overall. There was a bit too much talk of "belonging to" and comparing Valinda (and the other LeVeq women) to any other woman Drake has met, but besides that, I liked the characters, and I thought they were good together. The community aspect in general was also really nice. In all honesty, that was probably my favorite part, but again, that's more of a me thing than an actual comment on the book. I'm not sure I'll read more from Beverly Jenkins (I'm so sorry), but I would still recommend her, as well as this book.

Wow! I loved this. Beverly Jenkins’ men are amazing. I love them, and I’m not a big fan of men.
I just loved this story, everything about it. It takes place in New Orleans, post civil war, during reconstruction, and I loved the historical tidbits sprinkled throughout.
But more than that, I loved following an intelligent, bold, and kind woman find love with a tender hearted, strong man, against all odds. She faces trial after trial brought upon by the patriarchal standards forced upon her, hateful acts by white supremacists, and an oppressive government, and yet she is able to find joy, sisterhood, family, belonging, purpose... My eyes are tearing up even as I write this review. This was so much more than a love story.
This was my first Jenkins book, and it will not be my last.

Truly an incredible historical romance. I had such a good time & excited to go back and read previous books about the LeVeq men.

I cannot explain how or why this is my first book by Ms Bev but it certainly won’t be the last.
I love how deeply kind both Drake and Valinda are to each other. Even when they’re at odds, there’s cautiousness but no meanness. Maybe because of the violence of the setting, their relationship just feels like a soft place to rest (while also being decently spicy!)

this was a lovely read. i thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the development of the story. the pacing was a little fast at times, seemingly skipping over some pertinent bits but it was enjoyable all the same
