A solid introduction to the work of Jenkins. I liked both Valinda and Drake as characters and enjoyed following their sweet love story as it unfolded. However, the strongest thing about this book is the way that it incorporates the intricacies of its time period; everything felt carefully considered rather than a more contemporary romance simply inserted into a historical era, and I greatly appreciated this attention to detail. I'd love to explore more by her in the future.

I found the dialogue very stilted and any point of conflict to be too easily resolved. In short: I was bored. I did enjoy the historical components but not enough to slog through the rest of it.

The story had good pacing until the end. The Union soldier that that attempted to rape Val and chased and tried to capture her didn’t get enough of a punishment to me. How he was dealt with at the end felt like it was put in as a feel good moment just to get it out of the way as an afterthought. I think it should have got more attention and been more than a chase scene and him getting hit by a shovel and caught by the police. Val having her baby at the end felt really rushed as well. I think there could have been more written about her emotions over having a boy when she wanted a girl. Val’s father showing up felt completely out of the blue, though I guess it was supposed to feel like that because of how his character was explained by Val. Him being a gambler and selling off his daughters for money was pretty shocking to me. I was expecting him to just be a controlling asshole because he could be.

So very fun- I really enjoyed reading something in the style of classic historical romances but written this decade- it avoided all the yuck stuff but kept all the charm and classic romance elements.
