So very fun- I really enjoyed reading something in the style of classic historical romances but written this decade- it avoided all the yuck stuff but kept all the charm and classic romance elements.

This book has lots of story, some sexual tension, and a little actual steam. Like all historical romance, you need to be willing to gloss over the reality of the history to believe in a young woman who is so completely feisty, witty and sensual.

I had to start the book two or three times to actually get into the story as the initial 15 pages are pretty intense, especially for a romance. This was an nice changeup from the pervasive European historical romances, but in general I wanted more romance and less story.

This was so great!

Just the right formula of romance to historical plotlines. A lot of historical romances shy away fromthe historical context surrounding their romances and just focus on the propriety based society without uncovering any of the flaws. (Aside from the rather surface level feminist take). This book does not follow that trend, the plot is full of historical nuance about race, gender, sexuality and class. And marries both qualities without losing any of the kicking my feet and giggling over the romance.

They're smitten from the start but obligations get in their way, they have a small miscommunication trope, marraige of convenience trope, and then finally a love match. So fun and engaging. Love love love it.

I'm still very solidly in my historical romance mood lately and I just love Beverly's love stories. The swoon factor with them wins me every time. I devoured this book in like 24 hours. A teacher who is wanting to help freed slaves learn to read and write and running from an abusive father and running into the pirate/ businessman that helps her and they end up falling I mean yes, yes, yes!

I love Drake LeVaq and Valinda relationship especially when he built a school for her. Drake is one of my favorite LeVaq brother. I love the way Beverly Jenkins writes her female main characters especially Valinda.
