Beverly Jenkins is great for someone like me who prioritizes the history over the romance.

This is my first experience with a Jenkins novel. I liked it.

Sure, the characters and plot are fundamentally standard. I do like the history Jenkins includes. I do like the devotion and affection the married couples still share. It was just what I needed today.

She doesn’t miss!!

So many people love this author. I have tried several of her books and think that she is just not for me.
It wasn’t a bad story but I found it boring.

4 stars. I love Beverly Jenkins with my entire being. I can’t shout it from the rooftops enough. I thought this book was wonderful (shocking, I know) but I think what really worked for me is that where as the norm is for the hero to be emotionally constipated and have some weird thing about falling in love, it was the heroine here. Kind of. Valinda is more naive in love so she has trouble expressing her feelings and our hero, Drake, wears his heart on his sleeve. It was such a wonderful dynamic. They’re both really great characters and I loved their chemistry. The romance is swoon worthy and I loved how much Drake cared for her.
SpoilerHim getting the building for her to teach was everything. It made me love him even more.

I also loved that this book takes place in the Le Veq Family series and characters from those books are in this. Drake is the brother of Raimond from Through the Storm and it was wonderful getting to catch up with everyone.

I will say that the story is a bit slow going in the beginning but it definitely picks up and finds its stride by like page 75 or so.

I blew through this in a few hours. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. I was so drawn in. Also, I want to frame this cover and hang it up on my wall. It’s absolutely stunning. All of her book covers are beautiful, but this one is one of my favorites.

this was SO good. this was my second Beverly Jenkins book. I read before the dawn first & was extremely disappointed but this was absolutely brilliant. It was so wholesome. Drake is such a tender and kind character and valinda is so so strong & independent & their romance was so easy & fun to read. honestly, this historical romance was so comforting and warm, i enjoyed it thoroughly & i can't wait to read about the other leVeqs

Valinda is teaching the South by any means necessary. She faces adversity, violence and plain old hatefulness to try to teach former slaves throughout New Orleans to read and become educated. When Drake Le'Veq and his contagious pirates blood saves her from an attack she's taken with the man even though she has an intended and vice versa. These two flirt and tease one another all while uplifting the race. Can her tutor of pleasure make an honest woman of her, till death do they part and where does he fall in line with the fortune tellers prophecy of her losing a lover, rejecting a lover, and finding a lover.

You have to love the Le'Veqs! This family is relentless and tantamount to black royalty throughout the streets of New Orleans and Valinda, she fits in perfectly. Another piece of perfection by the Queen. (Listened to the audiobook)

i read this book in eighth (or ninth grade) but i never got to finish. anyways, i checked it out on the 28th and i listened to it for a minute. most of my listening happened yesterday. i really enjoyed it and i really hope beverly gets her flowers! she’s been writing amazing love stories for a long time. i hope i can get all of her books one day 😭
