I had high hopes for a period piece romance, but this novel failed to deliver. So many random details thrown into the mix of the plot, but they rarely added to the overall experience and overall storyline.

This book was so so good!!
Auntie Bev never ever disappoints and is the Queen of historical romance to say the least. I was immediately invested from page 1. Drake and Valinda’s love is the kind of love you dream of. It’s so beautiful and full of passion. The only person who got on my last nerve in this book was Valinda’s father. He was a straight co*k blocker 🤬🤬🤬🤬. Just didn’t know how to be embrace and support his daughter’s happiness!! Other than that, I want to marry Drake!!! 🫣🫣🫣Valinda’s intended—Cole… he was another story nonetheless, he played a crucial part in this beautiful love story. I definitely feel a re-read of this series coming on!! Swipe to read the synopsis, and some of my favorite moments and quotes from the book. On to book 2!!🫶🏾

A great introduction to the Le Vec family and Beverly Jenkins. This historical romance is set in post-war New Orleans, during the reconstruction period, and it reminds me of the sprawling family sagas I used to love reading as a teenager. Think The Forsyte Saga but set in the U.S. with less emotional repression and a lot more politics and racism.
Valinda is a school teacher from New York, trying to get a school for freedmen set up in New Orleans. I've never been particularly drawn to Beverly Jenkins books and only happened to read the first chapter of this on preview because I saw it was nominated for a couple of awards. That chapter hooked me and I immediately downloaded the book. The dynamic between Valinda and Drake Le Vec is so refreshing and watching their romance develop without the third-act breakup / miscommunication was a delight.

Firstly, this was my first historical romance novel from Beverly Jenkins. I had been hearing about how well her stories are formulated and I finally was able to experience it first hand.
Rebel was named perfectly as the main female character seemed to rebel against any ideologies that had been placed upon her. It appeared that the very thing she got judged for, was the exact thing that the main male character loved about her.
There were many lessons within the pages of this novel but one of the main things I admired about it was the writing style. Beverly Jenkins is by far in a league of her own. The way she narrated this story definitely got me wanting to take a masters class on how to create stories as passionately as this one. Like I mentioned, the modern stories of today are more erotic, and that’s fine, but this was sensual, passionate, and just down right “spicy”- without being vulgar.
The historical references were captivating. My heart was broken at different scenes in the book and this story does take place after blacks were freed from slavery. That is an emotion on its on, but overall I enjoyed learning things I had no idea about which has lead me down a researching path.
Anyway, as you can tell I truly loved this story and will be reading another novel by her soon (and adding to my library ).
