this book took me over 2 months to finish. i found it so goddamn boring at times. full of yapping. nonsense. eye rolling moments. our mc has such a hard time saying no that he ends up engaged to someone he doesn’t even like and just visited (was nice to) out of pity. he deserved much for than what he got in the end and i hope it haunts him forever lol. i didn’t like the book but pushed through hoping for a great twist but no, he stays miserable throughout the entire book.

a cutting portrait of the way societal pressure determines what one considers to be the correct course of action, even if it goes against one's inate moral sense

I wish I liked this book. And I wish I liked it a loooooot, because everything here is written with all the fanfare typical of really good books.

It was my first time reading something by Stefan Zweig, and right from the start I knew I was facing the kind of writing I enjoy: sculpted, but far far far from being perfectly preplanned.

Everything felt so natural and fluid, although a little far-fetched for my limited vocabulary in a language that isn’t my mother tongue. This is the kind of reading that immerses you so deeply you start seeing vivid colors, smells, and textures.

It’s all about the aesthetic: how people talk, dress, and most importantly, how they behave. And as someone drawn to aesthetics, I can say that, for me, it wasn’t quite enough— and maybe that’s the whole point.

The theme of pity and pride went on and on (and on again) until I was done with it. It was almost like a kafkaesque thing: its very purpose is to make you feel uncomfortable — so gut-wrenched you wanna throw the book across the room. What’s good here is truly good, but what’s bad is APPALLING.

And in the end, the worst part of it all was the bitter taste left in my mouth, because now I feel like the toxic one calling it quits in a relationship, profusely repeating “It’s not you. It’s totally me”.

one of the best books ive read so far. it took me a week to finish this and during this busy August i managed to find time to read and absorb every single word written.

its one of those stories that really scratched the back of my brain and had the topics you could genuinely discuss with. brilliant writing and hoping i could read more of stefan zweig.

this novel explores the devastating consequences of compassion when turned into pity.
