This book pulled out some of my favorite tropes, and I loved how Patton integrates poetry into her prose. I was a fan of the plot overall, and the commentary on art and human nature, on depression and recovery.
I appreciate Patton's writing style as well, but I think it's overworked! There are some good metaphors, but sometimes they're back to back to back with no breathing room in between, which grows exhausting. Same for the descriptions that often include one too many adjectives, or the lines that are over the top dramatic - "he's the fear that lies in the dark." What does that even mean?? I think with a little more space for the more natural prose to shine, the writing style would have been perfect.
I also think that the romantic connection was formed on nothing and the MMC didn't have much of a dynamic personality for the entire first half of the book. I'm not sure he had enough redeeming qualities for me to like him, but he did have good banter at times with the FMC.
Even so, I highlighted more lines in this book than I have in many others because the lines that did land well were really strong. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series and seeing how Patton's writing grows!
