There were parts that really immersed me in this book, but there were also parts that I skimmed and only read the dialogue. It’s up for debate whether I’ll read the second book or not.

very interesting idea. far too many metaphors. don’t like how things are spelt out. i like takeshi and how we don’t really know what he’s thinking yet.

Us Dark Few is an intriguing and fast-paced dystopian novel exploring a post nuclear apocalyptic world full of corruption.

Our main character Khalani has been sentenced to eternal servitude in the underground Braderhelm prison for stealing a book of poetry, living in a world where art from pre-collapse is hidden and taboo. She must get used to her new reality, avoiding the mysterious and cold captain of her cell block, Takeshi Steele. When secrets that could doom everyone come to light, she must be the first person to escape to the surface and away from her enemies, even it means teaming up with Takeshi and other prisoners to do so.

The premise of this is really unique and promising, and I think the author half-way delivered on it. While I didn't have strong feelings on Khalani either direction, I quite enjoyed Takeshi's character. Giving him a realistic background that explained his present motivations really worked in his favour, as it fleshed him out past the 'cold, coniving, deadly soldier' stereotype. I really liked Winnie as well, I'm a sucker for sweet, little old lady characters. I think more effort could have been put into the development of the other side characters because I really didn't feel all that much attached to anyone apart from Takeshi and Winnie.

Additionally, I wish the whole premise of 'art is forbidden' was explored more, as that could have been a really strong message and plot point, but it was sort of left to fizzle out. Also, the plot twist at the end I just felt was really random, there was very little foreshadowing or build up to it and it felt like it just happened, and you were left feeling like "oh, okay...".

Overall, this was a pretty enjoyable read, and I am invested enough to read the second book, and likely the finale of the trilogy. While I don't think this book is anything to write home about, I do think you'll enjoy it quite a bit if you're a fan of The 100 and Divergent.
