Original premise is good, and there are some lovely turns of phrase - but this book is just trying to do too much. As others noticed, the conversations between the characters felt stilted, and the pacing was off. Plot points that lack the emotional depth to be logical made it difficult to read at points. Wanted to love it but alas.

I was in the mood for a dystopian book and Us Dark Few didn’t let me down. I read it in one day and I’m downloading Us Deadly Few from KU as we speak. I ate it up. A wrongly accused, seemingly depressed woman, mercilessly thrown into a prisoner cell even more underground than she already was. Trying to survive and navigate her new reality, making friends for the first time in her life. Unfortunately for her, she always attracts unwanted attention, either from the handsome guard from her block or the Governor. But in the depths of this new reality, she uncovers hard truths and finds her worth and fire.
The story kept me intrigued from beginning to end, I couldn’t help but feel for Khalani. The injustice of a corrupt system through and through. She was fierce, sometimes stupidly so. Good thing Takeshi was there to save the day most of the time, always lurking in dark corners like a (hot) creep. I don’t want to say more, I don’t want to spoil anything. Let’s just say that it was very enjoyable and I’m diving into the second book right away, in detriment of my sleep hours.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 /5
🖤Dystopian
🖤Guard/prisoner
🖤Slow burn
🖤He teaches her how to defend herself
🖤Underground
