4.5 stars. I did not expect this book to make me sob uncontrollably but here we are.
The first 80ish pages of the book were tough for me to get though, I feel like the writing is in a pretty different style from the rest of the book? But once I got past the point I found myself really enjoying it. Throughly entertained and read it all in like 3 days.
I struggled so hard to keep reading as long as I did. I realized the big event promised at the beginning of the book doesn’t even happen until 60% of the way through, and the thought of reading 200 more pages of this poorly paced book was too much for me. I hate not finishing books to an extreme degree, but the main intrigue of the god being the romantic interest, even if it’s dark and manipulative, fell flat when he read as a mediocre man in his 20’s with no qualities going for him. The plot was too slow to keep me interested and it felt like pulling teeth to read. I’m devastated because not only did I have to DNF for my sanity, but it’s such a beautiful edition with beautiful illustrations but it’s just not enough to keep me going.
I loved this book. The imagination, the court politics, the gothic horror. I am already anticipating whatever work of fantasy this author comes up with next. One of my top books of the year.

Thanks to NetGalley & Avon and Harper Voyager for the copy in exchange for an honest review. Sadly, I DNF'ed at 20% of the way through.
The protagonist was so meek and sad, she was just depressing to read. I would've rooted for her but she had no strength in her. The writing was very...young adult-ish, lots of telling and not showing. Even in the timeskip she still feels placid.
No offense but I'm kind of surprised this is listed as Adult. It reads like a YA book and not really in a good way. The imaginary friend was just obsessed with her and I was just like, but why? She has no redeeming qualities.
"I like you because you're the worst of the worst."
That is a FUN line but makes no sense in the story! Girl hasn't done anything except be sad about her mom! Now, if she went full murder spree and bloodthirsty, I would've liked this book way better. At least then she would've been doing *something* instead of the story carting her around.
