I enjoyed it, as with most people I knew the story but I’d never read it and there is so much more in this novel than I imagined there would be. It follows Crusoe’s life after he leaves home and decides besides his father’s advice to go to sea, you may be surprised that he gets shipwrecked on more than one occasion!!! It also follows his life post shipwreck which I actually really enjoyed.
A lot of what I’ve read about this post reading is that people thought it was too monotonous and repetitive (there are parts which are told twice, once in diary form and in a story so yes I agree that could have been cut) but I also find those criticisms really bizarre as Defoe it trying to portray a man that’s stranded on an deserted island for a very long time.
I don’t want to give any spoilers so I won’t go into specifics however I really did enjoy it and I’m glad I’ve read it. I’d be interested in reading more of Defoe’s work in particular Moll Flanders which has been recommended to me.
