A very nostalgic re-read for me, it was an abrupt ending which was understanding as it was a diary but I wish it was longer. A great insight.

I remember loving this book as a kid, but as an adult I found it difficult to care. It was way too focused on world building, without enough plot points for me.
I loved the idea of a hidden journal found within an old quilt. I loved the introduction "I am Mary. I am a witch." I disliked the rest of the book. I could understand if this was a historical fiction piece talking about witchcraft in and around Salem, witch hysteria or even the unusual theories of why the later Salem Witch Trials happened at all, but this was none of those things. This wasn't even a fantasy fiction where Mary is a witch and the reader sees her use her powers. but it just doesn't work. I finished this because I had high hopes it was going somewhere but I feel like I just read the longest, more banal summary of a book. I know there is a sequel, but I can't bear the thought of reading another 350 pages of this story.
Spoiler
Rees tries to enter into the fantasy realm when Mary sees the past, present and future of the sailor boy.
This was a great book to read. The writing really drew me into the story. It's written like a diary and I believe this was the perfect style to put across the idiocy and superstitious clap trap that prevailed during early colonial times. I found myself becoming frustrated reading the actions of the townspeople. It just seems so idiotic to revert to a backward style of living. Having read this I see similarities to today with fear and paranoia of different religions taking hold. Hopefully thing don't progress to the heights they did during the 1600's. I highly recommend reading this novel.

I wish there was more closure from this book.
I hope a relationship between Mary and Jaybird happens in the next book, I'm going to read the sequel to find out!
