People who are reviewing this poorly based on the book’s content not matching up with 21st century attitudes are exactly why we’re regressing so much as a society in 2025. Of course some of the book’s content can now be viewed as problematic, it was published in 1973 and reflected the ideologies of the time! Books are so important because they are a time capsule and show how much we have changed as a society and help us learn and grow. Reviewing this poorly just due to its content is a form of censorship.

Now for the actual book, this was just profoundly upsetting and depressing. I loved that Rita Mae Brown did not change Molly’s morals and attitudes throughout the story. I really enjoyed this but am giving it only 4 stars just because it felt like some storylines were never finished (such as Kim and Chryssa).

Loved Molly's grit and shamelessness. The grapefruit bit was crazy and awesome. Fun & fast, and sustains a feeling of lightness, without pulling punches on the harsh repercussions of being gay back in the day.

This book had been on my wishlist for a long time. I loved the story SO much and am so glad I picked it up. Molly is an amazing character with depth, wits, and a strong personality. I thought the book flowed well and showcased growth for the main character. Rita Mae Brown’s writing style is easily digestible. I’ve found myself saying “bastard” a lot more because of this book. I can’t believe it was published in 1973, it seems like it could have just come out. Anyways, I highly recommend this book to anybody who loves dreamers, queers, and excellent writing.
