A stranded vacationing alien and a geeky sci-fi lover meet online and do the in person at a sci-fi convention. Ann Aguirre has written some fantastic sci-fi romance in the past and I happily picked up her latest which has romcom and cozy vibes.
I Think I’m in Love With an Alien brings together a lonely and somewhat desperate alien who is running out of supplies and his camo tech is getting glitchy with a human woman who struggles to connect with her own race until she finds her ‘tribe’ in the online group of friends who are alien-mad and one of whom is an actual alien.
Tam, the stranded alien, and Jennette agree along with friends to meet up at the big fan convention, but the pair of them felt a connection even online so they are really interested in an in-person with each other. Among the activities and settings of a sci-fi convention, Tam and Jennette make a connection and then explore a truly out of this world friendship and romance.
I Think I’m in Love With an Alien is a gently-paced piece and spends a great deal of the book on the group friendship and activities at the convention with Tam and Jen alternating points of view. These are a pair of sweeties who simply mesh as friends first. Jen is sexually Ace and with her quirky alien interest, her birth family connections are conflicted so it was good that she had these strong friendships with her online group that met together.
But, there were some mixed feelings had about the longer, sometimes lagging, first two-thirds and the change in pace for the last third. It has a big jump in time in the last third and bursts of excitement from hunters and the new situation after the truth comes out. In fact, I’m hoping there is at least a sequel to account for several loose plot threads to know what came of surrounding characters.
So, I Think I’m in Love with an Alien had some giggle-worthy moments especially with Tam’s wry observations about humans, a sweet slowburn friends to lovers, and the fun of a sci-fi convention for all the cozy sci-fi romance fans out there.
I have discovered that sci-fi romance is not for me. I thought I would give it a try because I love this author. But nope not for me. This is not a comment on the books contents or writing style! Just a personal preference.

The fact that the blurb likened this to Galaxy Quest made me want to read it instantly. I liked the premise of it, and the way the alien was written definitely adds to the feeling that he is not used to human interaction or even just basic ways to communicate, for example, using the phrase head fur. I enjoyed the sneaky Doctor Who reference, even if they have the dig about how 10 is usually everyone’s favourite (I can’t argue…. David Tennant is… well, David Tennant).
There is the opening for more books to be written in the series, there are a few loose ends that will hopefully get tied up in future books.
All in all, it was an enjoyable read.

This was such a delightful read, I loved the characters and this world!
I found the concept of this book quite interesting. Truth be told, it was an enjoyable read until nearly the end of the story. The pacing suddenly shifted, Jen's family issues were offputting, and overall, the ending felt hurried and didn't quite deliver the satisfaction I was hoping for. With a more fleshed out ending, this would have been much better. Just FYI, I received this as an ARC and this is my honest review of the book.

Overall thoughts: This was a cute read. It's a dual POV and I really liked both of the MCs so it was an enjoyable read overall. Because one of the dual POVs is from an alien, we get a lot of descriptions of the world we live in. Which, obviously, makes perfect sense because they're new here. However, as a reader, who does live here, some of the descriptions were a little lengthy in my opinion. I found myself wanting to skip ahead a bit. Something that was a real delight for me, as a "weird girl" myself, it was nice to see another "weirdo" get attention and romantic attention at that. However, it was a little hard for me, personally, to see/feel the attraction between the two emotionally and physically. However, as I'm not ACE that's not necessarily bad, just a smidge harder for me to connect. But goo for me to read. I liked the friendship of the online group and how they blended when they finally got to meet in person. Reminded me of some of my online friend groups.
While I had fun overall I felt like the ending was a bit rushed and some of the logic in the created danger neat the end was a bit questionable. I wont say much so I don't spoil it but the logic of some people being where they are..... just... the odds are outrageous. Even in a book about real aliens. ;)
Overall this was cute and fun. Not something I would reread.
What made my weirdo heart happy:
"...it requires reserving a year in advance to stay in the Jupiter room; apparently it takes two years to stay in Uranus."
and cat names Scotty and Spock!
Will I read more books by this author?: Yes. Probably.
Would I recommend this book to a friend?: To specific friends who like/want to try Sci-Fi romance with a touch of spice and ACE representation.
[I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.]

I was so excited for this book and it really disappointed me. Felt like I was attending every second of the con when we really didn't need to and all the elements of solid story were horribly mishandled. Really inconsistent with where they used real scifi media properties (ie Star Trek) and made up ones for the book (doctor y instead of doctor who) for seemingly no good reason?
On the one hand I want to give the author here credit for making the main character gray spec/ attempting to make an ace main character but I also just didn't buy the romance at all. The alien was very flirty over text and then was basically a cardboard cutout in person.
