⁕ The book is largely structured around Mateo and Rufus' narration with some 3rd person narration sprinkled in here and there. Each chapter is in chronological order and timestamped throughout their last day.
⁕ The ending of this book did not have the emotional impact that Tik Tok and Bookstagram promised. Maybe it's because the title of the book spoils it, but I think it's actually because the tear-jerking, misty-eyed moments are sprinkled in throughout the plot. The focus of the book is the journey and connections that are made along the way, not the destination.
⁕ The "sci-fi" elements central to the plot of this book are incredibly intriguing. However, if you are drawn to this book solely because of death cast and it's implications, this might not be the read for you! World-building only extends as far as it is relevant to the direct impact it has on Mateo and Rufus. There are no deep dives into the history, politics, or science besides some very vague basics.

The good:
This book is extremely thought provoking on the matter of fate and death. I loved the questions it very subtly raised. The characters were both relatable and showed two different ways you might react emotionally and physically if you knew you would die in the next 24 hours. There was a tension throughout the book that was very unique because you already know the way it will end, but as the pages go by you’re more and more tensed for the inevitable ending.
The bad:
I thought the switching between all kinds of characters and past and present tense and 1st and 3rd point of view was confusing and distracting. I would have much preferred if it had stayed between Mateo and Rufus; I feel like the author got sidetracked and tried to make everything intertwined and it really just lost me. The way Matias died was kind of rushed and lame in my opinion because so much time was spent building up to it. Rufus’ death was genius though and took me a second to register.
But! Overall really loved it and if you’re an insane literature analyzer like me it’s a good read.

This book is about a world where there is a service that tells you that you will die the day you die, you don't know how you die, or when but you know you die today. Two 18 year olds, Rufus and Mateo have gotten the call and become deckers, people who are going to die that day. They meet up on an app called Last Friend, and everything goes from there.
This book was beautiful. I loved it so much, I started reading this a while back before I got into reading as much as I have now and I can't believe I didn't like this at first. This book is amazing, their romance is amazingly written and it makes it seem like they've known each other for much longer than the one day they spend together. It was heartbreaking when they die. At the beginning you think you'll be able to prepare yourself but you can't. The way their development is written and their friendship that turns slowly romantic draws you in quite frankly immediately. They're both incredibly loveable and all the side characters are just as loveable. Some of the subplots felt a little random at first, but they do end up connecting all of these characters had depth to them immediately. I fell in love with the Pluto Solar System and if you haven't you will too. This book will have you sobbing, and it is definitely worth it.
