The twist was significantly less out of the blue than previous Bosch entries, which I enjoyed. It’s a relief to have a mystery than can be guessed instead of just a constant Scooby Doo chase.

Enjoyed the love interest and the denouement MUCH more than the past few. But I never like it when a mystery ends with

the killers being dead before they confess or face retribution. Like, we really went through all that for nothing?

Definitely a wee bit of a drop off from the previous two Michael Connelly books (The Last Coyote and The Poet) that I read, but both of those novels were definitely noteable standouts for me. Still an enjoyable read, despite being a pretty typical police thriller.

It's fun seeing the genuine development of Harry Bosch unfold over time as his character evolves. It would've been easy for him to just stay as a kind of 'loose cannon' officer, but there's actually a bit of nuance and growth to him with each boom.

With some of the new developments to his character, I'm quite keen to see how things go in the rest of the series.

Drove me nuts how Harry kept randomly saying “trunk music” during his long conversations with other characters. Like once he learned what it meant he had to show off he knew slang every other page, and it was eye rollingly annoying to the point that it would take me out of the story. I know it’s a minor thing but also I’m pretty sure he explained trunk music like five times to his boss in three pages.
