This collection actually contains three short stories, although the only mention of this fact is inside the front cover!
The main story is narrated by an unnamed friend of Legrand who observes how his friend becomes obsessed with finding treasure after being bitten by a golden coloured scarab-like beetle. After finding said treasure, Legrand then explains how he went about solving a cipher which would eventually lead him to the hiding place.
Legrand’s servant Jupiter is a black man, whose dialogue is written phonetically and sometimes I found it difficult to follow so had to read it quite slowly! The way Jupiter is portrayed has been criticised as being stereotypical and that his accent is inauthentic, but I think one has to remember that when the story was written (1843) this portrayal would have been entirely acceptable.
Although I enjoyed it I didn’t think of it as being a ‘horror’ story at all like the ‘blurb’ suggests.
The second story in the collection, The Sphinx, is only 6 pages long and I won’t say too much about it as I don’t want to give anything away, but I thought it was great - very clever!
The final story, William Wilson, is a story of doppelgangers - William Wilson attends school where another boy with the same name of him joins the school on the same day as him and shares the same birthday! He also looks quite a lot like William.
Wilson leaves the school and after spending time at home, he enters Eton and then Oxford where his lifestyle becomes more and more debauched. His obsession with his double, who seems to turn up at every opportunity, consumes him and eventually leads him to attack his double. This was definitely the darkest of the three stories and also my favourite and I shall definitely be looking out for more by this author.

Nadat ik gisteren een omnibusfilm gezien had over het werk van Edgar Allan Poe, Histoires Extraordinaires voor de geïnteresseerden, wou ik wel eens wat meer van zijn werk beginnen lezen. Ik wou oorspronkelijk eens naar de bibliotheek fietsen, maar blijkbaar had mijn moeder ooit eens een omnibus gekocht genaamd Fantastische Vertellingen. Dat natuurlijk meteen uit de kast gaan vissen en The Gold Bug, oftewel De Gouden Kever, was het eerste kortverhaal in de bundel.
Niet meteen een goede opener als je het mij vraagt. Geen idee of het de stijl van Poe is of eerder een keuze van de uitgeverij, maar qua opmaak is hier wel wat op aan te merken. Geen onderverdeling in hoofdstukken, geen alinea's, … Gewoon een hele lap tekst en dat bladzijde na bladzijde. Soit, de essentie is een soort van detective verhaal met een avontuurlijk tintje à la Treasure Island. Het probleem is echter dat het boek gewoonweg geen spanningsboog heeft. Vind sowieso de keuze van Poe om het trio eerst de schat te laten vinden en nadien pas uit te leggen hoe het mysterie in elkaar zit nogal vreemd en onnatuurlijk. Daar komt gelukkig nog wel bij dat de ontknoping leuk in elkaar zit. Het is mooi meegenomen dat ik sowieso te vinden ben voor dit soort geheimschrift raadseltjes, maar Poe weet het in het algemeen leuk te brengen. Het personage Jupiter zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk al wel eens ergens wat relletjes hebben veroorzaakt, hoe vaak is Kuifje in Congo al niet in het nieuws gekomen, maar ik vond vooral zijn dialogen erg vervelend lezen.
Ik wil Poe zeker en vast nog niet afschrijven op één verhaal, maar ik verwacht toch wat meer van de andere titels in het boek. Onder andere Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Black Cat en The Pit and the Pendulum lijken me wel wat. The Gold Bug is zeker en vast niet slecht en leest vlotjes, maar ik hoopte op meer.

This is more of an adventure story than the creepy gothic horror that typefies Poe. An obsessive man is looking for Captain Kidd's buried treasure with the help of his black servant, whose English is reminiscent of that employed by Mark Twain for Jim. Cryptography and ciphers are employed as key elements in the story.

Pointless and boring but thankfully short
Určite stojí za prečítanie. Na tomto vydaní mi vyhovovali poznámky a sem tam aj vysvetlivky na konci knihy.

Muy buen relato, es una narración que no te deja parar de leer hasta terminarlo. Me pareció algo loco todo, pero sin duda vale la pena.
