This actually contained both Gunmetal Magic and Magic Gifts. Both of these storylines overlap and I think it would have actually been better if they were combined into one books so that most of the book is from Andrea's POV and then there would be a few chapters from Kate's. If you don't read it as a duel read then there will be some minor spoilers either way, however Magic Gifts ends before the final events that occur in Gunmetal Magic.

Although I wouldn't say these are integral to the overall storyline of this series, I think it does provide a lot of character development that makes it worth while to read. Particularly so for Andrea, Raphael, and the Bouda clan as a whole. One thing that I really love about this series and the way these authors write their characters, is that they are so relatable and realistic. When a major conflict happens the characters respond in such honest ways and things aren't just swept under the rug. They continue to create a world and stories that have such a great mashing of urban fantasy, post apocalyptic, divine magic, mythology and supernatural creatures.

🎀 Read for The Grand KD Buddy Read/Reread/Rererereread 2017-2018 with the Addicts (IAA™) 🎀

I have said it before and i will say it again: Andrea is one of my favs and she is god damn #friendship_goals.

This story was fucking amazing and I am oh so very glad that Andrea finally got her shit together and that we got to read it all. She is so similar to Kate and yet so different it would have been blasphemy to not have them be BFFs. And do not get me started on her and Raphael! Simply ♥

Another thing of significance here: Roman. He is just fucking adorable! I want moar of him! *swoon*
And like always the humor was really strong wthi this one.

Here, have some quotes:
Spoiler
“Damn. That’s some shooting.”
“We aim to please,” I told him.
“You aim like you mean business.”
Funny thing, praise. I knew I was a great shot, but hearing it from the PAD veteran made me all warm and fuzzy anyway.

~~~~~
We jumped off the ledge and walked down the road straight into the guard. He saw my face and drew back.
“What in the bloody hell are you?”
“Andrea Nash,” I said. “This is my associate, Robin of Loxley.”
Ascanio saluted with the bow. Thankfully no Latin spilled out.
~~~~~

Putting concealer and foundation on Kate turned out to be a losing proposition, because after the first five minutes it bugged her and she kept rubbing her face until she looked like a clown who got painted up in the dark.

~~~~~
“Still the same outfit, I see. Do you ever change it up?”
“In private,” he said. “Must maintain the whole ‘knitted from darkness and shadow’ image.”
“Aren’t darkness and shadow the same thing?” I asked.
He wagged his eyebrows at me. “Aaah, you’d think so, but no. Shadow implies the presence of light. I am not all bad, you see. Parts of me are good. In fact, parts of me are excellent.”
~~~~~

I nodded. I was so happy to be out of there. “Barabas, if you weren’t batting for the other team, I’d marry you.”
He grinned. “If I weren’t batting for the other team, I would accept your proposal. You had me at ‘No comment.’ If all my clients were this smart, my life would be much easier. Much, much easier.”

~~~~~
Kate smirked.
“What?”
“Your horse looks pink.”
“So?”
“If you paste some stars on her butt, you’ll be riding My Little Pony.”
“Bugger off.” I patted the mare’s neck. “Don’t listen to her, Sugar. You are the cutest horsey ever. The correct name for her color is strawberry roan, by the way.”
“Strawberry shortcake, more like it. Does Strawberry Shortcake know you stole her horse? She will be berry, berry angry with you.”
~~~~~

“You want me to wear these?” Roman looked at the ACUs and put his hand over his chest, as if protecting his black robe. “That’s not right.”
“You have a problem with pants?” Raphael asked.
Roman pulled his robe apart, revealing a pair of black jeans underneath. “I always wear my pants. I just don’t want to deal with that retarded outfit. I don’t even know how to put it on.”
Roman sighed, rolled his eyes, and stripped off his robe and jeans, revealing a muscled torso. Well. Someone worked out. Roman pulled on the fatigue pants, grabbed the black boots, folded the bottom of the pants in a practiced move, and stuffed his feet into his boots.
Hmmm.
Next he took the ACU top and rolled up both sleeves in a perfectly even summer regulation cuff. Raphael stared at him. Roman pulled the ACU on and flexed. “Makes your arm bigger, see?”
“You asshole,” I punched him in the shoulder.
“Gentle! I bruise easily.” He rubbed his carved biceps and I caught a glimpse of a tattoo on his arm: a skull wearing a beret. Army Ranger.
Now I had seen everything.

As usual, outstanding work from Ilona Andrews. I personally prefer the novels about Kate, but this book was just as awesome. It has everything just right: some romance (crazy shapeshifter stuff) - but not too much, so I don't get sick of it -, excellent world-building, plenty of action and a decent story. Not counting of course all the characters we already had already known and loved, as well as some new ones.

If you've followed the Kate Daniels series so far, this is a must-read for you. You won't be disappointed.

I love the Kate Daniels books. I mean, I loooooooove them. So I was rather excited about Gunmetal Magic and over the last two weeks, I finally got the opportunity to listen to the audiobook.

I went into this book wanting to LOVE it and I have to say….I liked it but I didn’t love it. Not the way I love the Kate Daniels books.

And here’s why:

ANDREA
I was kind of disappointed in the version of Andrea I was introduced to in this book. The Andrea that we got to know in the Kate Daniels books was sarcastic yes but not to a point of biting. Gunmetal Magic has a different side of Andrea that I wasn’t used to at all. It felt like Ilona Andrews tried too hard to make her a Kate Jr. rather than allowing her to carry the book on her own merit. She just has a totally different feel in this book from her character in the KD books. Not that I didn’t like her in this book. I did. But I found myself, on several occasions, thinking that I was actually listening to Kate and had to remind myself that it was Andrea. That should never happen, not when you have two strong characters with strikingly different personalities.

RAPHAEL
I loved him in this book. I really did. In the Kate Daniels books, we only got a taste of what he’s like and in Gunmetal Magic, you get a full-on dose. I do have to say I wanted to punch him square in the unmentionables for about half of the book but all was explained and my need to hurt him subsided. And there are two scenes in this book that will make you fall over and swoon. … … Ok, get your mind out of the gutters! They aren’t sex scenes. It has to do with dialog! … …perverts… …

KATE & CURRAN
What can I say? LOVED THEM AS ALWAYS. They’re such a dynamic pairing. These are two characters that were totally built for each other in every way. They aren’t in the entire book but the scenes they’re in will make you start going through withdrawals. I can’t wait for the next KD book!

ROMAN
Roman, Roman, Roman. Roman was always a character I wasn’t sure I liked. I give it to Gunmetal Magic. This book completely swayed my opinion and he’s now one of my favorite characters. I am really hoping that we see more of him in future books. Or perhaps his own book….. Hmmm Ilona Andrews??? Oh!!! And this book reveals a bit of a secret about Roman and the way it is revealed will make you laugh pretty damn hard.

Ok, so aside from the Andrea not really feeling like Andrea situation, the other thing that I took issue with was the main story arc in this book. Gunmetal Magic, like all of Ilona Andrews writing, carries several story lines at once. A few minor ones and they one major one that crosses all the others.

Storyline #1: The initial Investigation
The book kicks off with an investigation into a shifter murder. I am not going to go into any more detail than that because I don’t want to blow the story line for those that haven’t read the book yet. This is the big story arc that crosses over the rest. It’s also the one I didn’t like. You start out with this thunderous opening to the book, full of energy and then it just sort of craps out and drags. I found that I was far more interested in the minor story lines that the big one and isn’t the big one sort of the point? You know? Not that it was all around bad. I found that it went from interesting to not, back to interesting, back to not, then back to interesting. That makes for a long book when it doesn’t grip you all the way through. As much as I love the writing of Ilona Andrews, I found this main story arc lacking. And it kind of made me sad and I have been putting off the review because it makes me sad to even say I wasn’t crazy about it.

Storyline #2: Andrea & Raphael
This one had me. All the way through. From start to finish, I was DYING to find out what happens. If you haven’t read the Kate Daniels books, read those before reading Gunmetal Magic so you understand the scope of the characters’ history, including how Andrea and Raphael got to where they are at the beginning of Gunmetal Magic. You won’t regret the decision. Just do it. For those that HAVE read the KD books, you’re in for a treat. All the tension and anger and love and lust and anguish – it’s all here. Let’s just say that the story of Andrea and Raphael is FAR from over. I won’t say if it’s to be together or to spend eternity TORMENTING each other but it’s far from over. And either way, you will laugh your ass off. I promise you that.

Storyline #3: Andrea’s History
I can’t pick a favorite between #2 and #3 because it is a damn close tie. We don’t learn a whole lot about Andrea’s history in the KD books. Gunmetal Magic doesn’t just give you a glimpse of who she is, you’re submerged in it and WOW is it an interesting story. Who she is, where she came from and why she turned out the way she did are all explained in this book. Again, finding out the details of her past was a gripping story line.

Overall, I am going to give Gunmetal Magic 3.5 stars. I am actually sad even typing that but it’s true. It’s a good book but not as gripping as previous writing from Ilona Andrews. I adore the world they’ve created and all their books have SO MUCH built into them and I felt that Gunmetal Magic fell short by comparison. I think that a little more thought needed to go into Storyline #1 to really hold the reader all the way through. It was detailed but not intriguing in the way the rest of their books are. The original investigation seemed to get a little lost in the rest of the story. It started out with this crazy adrenaline rush and then felt like the rest of the book was spent trying to find the story rather than the story flowing.

 We take a break from Kate's adventure and now it's time for her bestie, Andrea Nash to take the spotlight. Her story also told from 1st PoV and while Andrea is ofc kickass and badass like Kate, their voice is different. Gunmetal Magic is pretty much Andrea's full story, about her growth, her acceptance of her beastkin nature and her relationship with her bouda lover, Raphael Medrano. Through Magic Bleeds and Magic Slays, reader get to know about Andrea's fallen from grace, not only she got "retired" (more like expelled) from the Order of the Merciful Aid, Raphael also disappointed because apparently Andrea choose the Order rather than the Pack. Can't blame the man, though. He really fallin in love hard especially shown from the novella Magic Mourns. But, we forget that he also spoiled brat, so what he did to Andrea in the first part of the book is pretty much mean and cruel. But, I'm glad that their falling out get resolved quick and no need to prolong the drama.

In Gunmetal Magic, Andrea finally embrace her beastkin and also relent to Aunt B's request for her to join Clan Bouda. The last part kinda feel a little bit anticlimatic knowing Andrea in the previous books is pretty gung ho to reject the Pack. Or maybe, just maybe by accept her beastkin nature, it's the way of Andrea to tell "Oh, I have enough!!". So, while her joining Clan Bouda seems a little bit of nowhere, I think Andrea also did it because of her relationship with Raphael. Speaking about relationship, I crack up when reading part of Kate tell Andrea that her relationship with Raphael is pretty much like Spanish telenovella. Complete with tortured glances and twin brothers comment, lel. But, yeah, both Andrea and Raphael are dramatic, drama queen is their middle name. Bouda hyenas sure love dramas and make a statement. Although, I like that Raphael is not uber jealous and territorial like Curran. It's shown that he didn't mean when Roman get closed to Andrea, although of course both men still bickering and punching each other. The breaking and entering between Raphael and Andrea is of course hilarious as hell and one of my favorite scene as well.

Speaking about Roman, a REALLY INTERESTING FELLA! Sigh, IA know how to make charming secondary male characters like Roman and Barabas. I cracked up reading Roman's comment "you shall not pass" and Andrea wry remarks about him now being Gandalf. This is why I love reading IA books, so many one punch liners that are witty, sarcastic and full of dry humor. The mystery itself pretty solid and I like the touch of Egypt and Slavic myth. I like IA's take regarding the origin of mythology, legend and god's worship. There are a hint about First, a mix of human and animal that apparently are more special than ordinary human. Erra already said that Curran is a First in Magic Bleed and in this book, the enemy also said that they avoid the Pack because the Pack is lead by Curran, a First. Pretty much intriguing, huh.

Gunmetal Magic also have a bonus novella, Magic Gifts that back to Kate and Curran. The timeline of this novella apparently happen before and within the timeline of Gunmetal Magic and some part of the novella and the novel are intertwined. We get a glimpse into Neo Viking Heritage, a community that have Viking ways not Viking people, so even you are not born in Skandinavia or something as long you willing to embrace your viking way, you will get accepted. The situation about the Mercenary Guild also got solved and show the glimpse that behind all that arrogance and jealousy, Curran is a strategic thinker and really a manipulator to the core. The scene when Kate and Curran have a date is my favorite because it's rare to see them being relaxed and pretty much in love for each other.

A good book in Kate Daniels world that show glimpse into our favorite Bouda beastkin, Andrea Nash and her personal growth!

As I continue through the Kate Daniels series, I have come to enjoy many of the colorful side characters too. Gunmetal Magic steps aside from Kate as the lead and puts Andrea Nash in the hot seat as a heroine. I enjoyed watching her grow. She was already a scrappy fighter and tough woman because her early years were horrific and she had to fight for everything. However, she had some personal growing to do which involved accepting herself, accepting that others would accept her real self, and trusting others to help. She had to hit rock bottom before this all could take place. So in true fashion, the authors write her an exciting case that coincidentally involves Rafael and manages to segundo in Kate and the rest of the gang as back up.

Andrea is a fun if exasperating heroine that I enjoyed to read along with her as the narrator. She has a stubborn-streak, a flair for drama (what bouda worth their salt doesn't?), and a wicked sense of humor. I was thrilled by the exciting investigation adventures and bit my lip with groans as Rafael pulled a cruel stunt and then it was game on between him and Andrea.

One of the characters, Roman, the dark mage, who appeared earlier in the series was a compelling character and I really hope to encounter more of him as the series progresses.

It was definitely worth the read and fans of Kate Daniels would miss out if they skipped it. Kate and Curran are there so its not exactly a drought of their presence.

Renee Raudman continues as the series narrator and I enjoyed her storytelling and handling of a lot of characters.  I was not as keen on the way she had Andrea do that whisper-whine thing when she was stressing.  But this was small potatoes.

All together, both stories were fantastic and all round delicious Urban Fantasy that leaves me hungry for more.
