It was a cute story, and I enjoyed reading it! I was really curious to know if they would find each other in the end.

However, it bothered me that the recurring Japanese quote in the book ("Oai dekite ureshii desu") was mistranslated. It actually means "I'm glad to have met you," not "How are you today, beautiful." Also, Keiko says her grandfather's generation immigrated to the United States. That would make her a sansei (third generation), not nisei, like she claims. Sounds a little petty, but I feel like there were a number of these little mistakes that took away from the experience as I was reading it.

A slow-paced narrative of young romance, enmeshed with a thoughtful tale of loss and family. Telling the story from two time points, this book follows Henry Lee after his wife's death in 1986 while at the same time depicting his childhood in Seattle in 1942. The early story examines conflicts between the United States and its culturally Japanese citizens as well as addressing the rocky place of those with Chinese heritage within America.

It's hard to read this now and not think of the general suspicion heaped on Muslim citizens of the United States, and indeed when this was published - seven years ago - the discussion questions relate to that very topic. And it's still relevant. Just how do you determine a citizen's loyalty? Our nation's values of freedom and equality under the law are vital to our national character, but seem to be the first on the chopping block when we feel threatened. And most unfortunately, those who are easily identified - either visually or through their names - are the most often targeted as "other" or as disloyal.

I did not find this to be a quick read, or particularly thrilling, but a slow examination of many rich topics.

A little slow in the beginning. But as you continue it gets better and better. I didn't have high hopes for this because I had to read it for school but it really a great book! It gives you a different perspective of the war's affect on people in America

I can only add my five stars along with all the others and wish I weren't on the last page! What a touching, tender story!!!!! Loved every page!
