A book that used traffic to reveal human behaviour in ways I had never thought of before. Definitely recommend.

Should be required reading for every driver.

Gave me lots of food for thought during my boring commutes. It also made me want to take the bus.

I really wanted this to be better. This was more a book about our reaction to traffic and not as much about traffic itself.

Still an interesting read, though.

What I learned... judgment of risk and safety involve many, many contradictions. Overall, lots of interesting facts and statistics, but kind of hard to read.

Overall, it asks more questions than it answers. It seems we really dont know a lot about the subtle dynamics of traffic, road safety, etc. More is less, but less is also more.

I learned quite a bit from thsi book, but i felt i could have learned more. I would have appreciated more technical analysis of different traffic situations and more comparative analysis of traffic in different countries, as well as the tools that are used to do the analysis. Also would have appreciated more history as well as practical tips to maximizing common traffic occurrences to you benefit.

Instead a lot of the books focuses on the intuitive/obvious aspects of traffic/road safety and goes into great detail on how its not as simple as it might seem. This ultimately becomes tedious to read, althought iwoudlnt say its redundant.

If you are looking for a single book to read on the nature of traffic, i dont think this is it. But i dont think one really exists either.. YMMV

Vanderbilt's observations are interesting, and I felt like he got a bit Kevin Kelly in his discussion of emergent behavior and comparison of driving/human behavior to locusts and ants. The book is readable in a day and that's all one should spend on it. It's nothing spectacular but it is interesting to think about as drivers/walkers/passengers. I was impressed with nearly 100 pages of notes and sources.

This was a really interesting read. Turns out pretty much everything we think we know about driving is wrong... lots of counterintuitive stuff in here. Written in a pretty readable style with lots of anecdotes and quotes. And now I can't stop thinking about it when I am in the car!!

Lots of interesting info!

Excellent book--would make the world a safer place if more people read it.
