I did struggle to rate it, I think 3.5 would be more accurate. I couldn't really get into this story. Pug, although there is nothing wrong with him, just didn't appeal to me as the main character, I couldn't bring myself to care about him. I enjoyed much more reading about Arutha and Tomas, and that's why the second part of the book was much easier for me. The references to Lord of the rings are shocking at times, again especially at the beginning, but it gets better with time. I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with this story, I guess I just read too much fantasy to fully appreciate it, the book has its years and some tropes were bitten to the death already. I probably will give a go to the second part (when I dig that low on my tbr list that is).

Some nostalgia may be colouring my high rating but a decade after my first read, this book was more enjoyable than I thought itbwould be. I remember originally being bored of Pugs and Tomas story, but this time around I appreciated it more. Also, Arutha is just as much my favourite as last time. I was also pleasantly surprised at (some) of the female characters having more personality than is usually given to them in these sorts of books from those sorts of times... can't wait to get stuck into the rest.

Since so much happens in the plot I‘m impressed that the world building was good. I enjoyed all the different races and am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Would love to get to know the characters thoughts and feelings better though, especially the women
