Even Though I Knew the End was a fantasy novel unlike most I’ve read—blending historical fiction with supernatural elements like angels and demons. Unfortunately, those fantastical elements didn’t draw me in the way I’d hoped. The story was very short and fast-paced, which made it feel rushed and didn’t give the plot or characters much room to develop.

I listened to the audiobook, and I struggled with the narration. I couldn’t quite tell if it was the tone of the writing or the narrator’s delivery (or both), but it didn’t connect with me. The main character was deeply flawed, which can be compelling, but in this case, her selfishness made it hard for me to root for her.

This book had a unique premise, but it wasn’t for me.

I don’t tend to go for heaven & hell and their avatar-type stories. But I do like magic. This book mixes the two into a mystery crime detective genre. Think 1920s underground gay scene with magic, devils, and angels.

Entertaining if a bit hard to follow at times might just be my relationship to audiobooks.

Polk (and Helen, our gumshoe) charmed my socks off with this sapphic noir novella. I don't think I'll ever tire of this type of angels and demons trope, especially not if they're as well-dressed and charming as Marlowe.

Will I be likening this to 1940s Chicago sapphic Constantine (2005)? Yes, and happily. Helen is certainly more earnest than our boy John, but they both have a strict timeline and big secrets.

What really sealed the deal for me, what absolutely sold it, was Edith. Edith and Helen's relationship is rock solid. The secrets they carry day to day do not destabilize their commitment to one another, and that rules. I love lesbians!
