Lovely and refreshing but so slow-paced I'm dreading the rest of this trilogy. I loved the worldbuilding and the easy, not overly complex worldbuilding. Original and nearing magical realism. But it felt too long for a 270 page book with like font size 16.
Graphic: Death, Slavery, Blood, Death of parent, Abandonment, Colonisation, War, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Torture, Alcohol
I thought the narrator did a great job, but because he sounds British, I assumed Junipa was actually named Juniper. Not a huge difference, but I was a little confused when flipping through the book. The narrator did a wonderful voice for Merle and the envoy from Hell, as well as Archimbaldo, but I wasn't as fond of Vernithrax or the Flowing Queen. Anyway, I didn't realize when listening to it that the book was the first in a series, so the ending threw me. I feel like it was a great book up to the flowing queen, but she sort of irritated me. Eft's Little Mermaid story was wonderful, though, which helped my opinion of the book immensely.

I really liked this book. If you ignore some issues that I assume were translation problems then it's a really great book. It does end very abruptly though. I have all three books so it wasn't as big of a deal but if I were reading this and didn't have the other books I would be upset. The ending is totally random. Also, the mummies are not really mummies, they are really zombies but that's a technicality I guess. I like the characters thus far and love the idea of the stone lions. He actually does a pretty good job of bring many different cultures and myths together when it seems like they should clash and never mix. The titles of the books are a little off as well because thus far the Water Mirror hasn't played a huge role in the book. I like it over all though. I LOVE LOVE some of the characters and ideas being discussed.
OH! P.S.
It has an interesting look at religion. It's just skimming concepts of religion so far but I have high hopes for a better exploration in the next two books.

Set in a magical incarnation of Venice, the only thing I didn't like about this exciting fantasy was the abrupt cliffhanger ending, which just says to wait for the next book. Good salesmanship, I guess, but cruel! I have The Stone Light (Book 2) but I've been ignoring it in protest.

Love the involvement of current culture and places in the world with the well known mythos of certain creatures. Interested to see where the series takes me.
