this was a fantastic horror novella (short story?). it had me in suspense the entire time, and genuinely frightened in some parts. i was scared to walk around the house at night listening to this. it seriously gave me the "heebie jeebies" (lol 😭)

the writing was very competent and well done. this feels like the type of thing you would study for a class - but actually enjoy :> would def recommend if you want something a little bit scary creepy but short and simple. <3

Fantastic early atmospheric horror with rich descriptions of the Danube river (and the willows). For all the suspense and buildup, the climax was a little lackluster, but the final line of the book more than makes up for it.

The possibilities that frighten the narrator and his companion just don't frighten me at all, but I do love the way that this is written. It's very "Twilight Zone" or "X-Files," but of course, long before those existed.

Had me in suspense the entire time. Still haunts me.

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood, written in 1907, is an early horror story that masterfully plays with the minds of both its characters and readers.

The tale follows two friends who find themselves stranded on a small, desolate island in the middle of nowhere. As they navigate the eerie landscape, the natural sounds and sights around them become increasingly menacing, instilling a growing sense of dread.

The story skillfully blurs the line between reality and imagination, leaving readers to question whether the terror is real or a product of the characters’ minds. Blackwood’s atmospheric writing and psychological tension make this a haunting and unforgettable read.
